July 18th, 1995 - 26 years ago - I80 Ohio - I was arrested with over 30 lb of cannabis and some hashish all marked âNOT FOR SALE MEDICAL USE ONLYâ by a five car drug interdiction team. When they asked if I had any marijuana, I said yes, and told them that I had an international prescription for medical cannabis, they looked at me rather confused and then just started to laugh.
At the time of my arrest, I was operating the San Diego Cannabis Compassion Club, and there were only three clubs in the state, Dennis in SF, mine in SD and WAMM in Santa Cruz.
Back in 1994, the only thing we required at any of the clubs in order to get cannabis was a letter from a doctor indicating your medical condition, but that changed when I went to Amsterdam for the Cannabis Cup in November of 1994 with Jack Herer. While there, I was told about a doctor in Rotterdam who was actually writing real prescriptions for medical cannabis to legitimate patients, so I paid him a visit to see if he would write me a prescription for medical cannabis for my use of it to treat chronic pain due to a five vertebrae spinal fusion.

In early 1995, I was the only person in California carrying around a doctorâs note and trying to convince cops that it made me legal, but that would soon change. My friend and doctor was Dr. Tod Mikuriya, who authored the book, the âMarijuana Medical Papers: 1839â1972â, and when I saw him and showed him my prescription, he thought it was a great idea and he wrote me my first American recommendation. Dennis started encouraging his patients to ask their doctors for a letter of recommendation instead of a letter outlining their condition, and soon everyone was talking to their doctors about their cannabis use and getting a note. After the passage of 215, doctors across the state became comfortable enough to start writing letters of recommendation to thousands of patients.

Yet on Wikipedia it says.
The legal history of cannabis in the United States began with state-level prohibition in the early 20th century, with the first major federal limitations occurring in 1937. Starting with Oregon in 1973, individual states began to liberalize cannabis laws through decriminalization. In 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical cannabis, sparking a trend that spread to a majority of states by 2016. In 2012, Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize cannabis for recreational use.
And if Google is our friend why is it contradicting you?
