I run into this at work all the time. People like to see a simple number that summarizes the results. We call this a metric, and we will then track it over time. The change in the metric represents progress towards a goal. There is some value to this metric, but it doesnt reflect the true cost.
Good point
A true honest cost to grow per gram would be ideal.
Unfortunately because of the sales dept and not wanting to disclose the numbers I wouldn’t trust that number from a commercial grow.
Would be interesting to track just how cheap/efficient it could be done.
My best was 8oz off a 2x2 scrog under a 600w no supplemental CO2 and only one seed (I had others taking up the footprint but none that did that well)
This woulda worked out to 2# over a 4x4 under a SE 600w HPS.
Genetics make the most difference
I wish I cloned it as I’m sure I could push that further as it was my first scrog. Even further with CO2. Even further with RDWC. This was just a bubble bucket. And better lighting I could see that strain getting 2gpw.
Was a freebie seed of dark star kush. Currently growing it to see if I can get that production again.
I think tracking costs for grows would be a good thing for many people, but Im just too sloppy, and lazy with my bookkeeping, and taking notes. I go to Home Depot for a part for my weed whacker and bring home some plumbing fittings for a new hydro idea, or some other dang thing - and then dont write it down anywhere. Plus I buy stuff thinking I will do a project one way, then part way in I get a better idea and 1/2 the stuff I bought before is now trash. Do I count that as part of the cost or?
I like @MicroDoser 's Gm/cu ft/ week thing, but since I will always have the same size tent, I think I will reduce that to gms/week. For my personal growing I think thats the most important stat as far as deciding if a particular technique or strain is worth doing again or if I need to try something different.
Both of these questions are both a bit too personal and 100% irrelevant.
At the end of the day the only thing that matters is cost to do business just like any other business.
If it costs you lets say 100 a zip to produce it, and it costs me 25 explain how size of rooms matter? We will assume our spaces are the exact same size.
In other words if Everything is the same except for our lighting bill and mine is 1/4th your bill my GP is 75% higher. Size of the rooms will make zero difference.
It’s because it is a lot different when growing commercial. I guess commercial is in the eye of the beholder. Why do I see all these multi million dollar modem facilities such as the jungle boys and not one led in sight. Everyone is running dehps. ( Don’t think anyone has used hps in years) Iagree that a home grower or even a small grow would benefit led lights and stacking trays.
The proportional costs drastically change when you scale up. Get inquiry for a 50 liter jerrican of nutes VS 1 liter, soils, coir etc… even the lights themselves when you buy it by dozens. You have a bigger leverage first to get more sweet prices per unit but also to negociate a bonus VS fidelity etc … Same with electricity, “real estate rent”, water …
I believe this one is 19 stories, and not a DEHPS in site. I am not at liberty to discuss where this one is as I signed a non disclosure when I toured the facility.
Well the commercial growers using HPS (in the UK) are mostly running grow houses with stolen power so overheads are next to 0.
they are interested in how much product you can harvest from a house (or street)
in 3 months.
If we’re talking percy then to me its all about quality, I’d rather have 1/2 ounce primo that suits my body/brain, than 20 Oz or the money, as I just cant buy the strains I want here. If I could go to a dispensary Id take the money
