How do you pick your stud?

Did you get anywhere with this? I’d think they’d all show it. Ethylene is blocking gibberellin production in the plant making it show flowers. A better test might be, which ones are sterile or mostly sterile after reversal

I never had the need to figure anything out and left it alone as a question to be answered. I chalked it up to ethylene gas build-up. I started adding extra vents to vessels as well.

I did have a tissue culture student roll through a class that has been reversing males for nearly 15 years and taught me all about Florel and reversing males and how he uses it in his breeding program.

Ah for sure. Makes sense :relaxed:

Yeah I’ve been sitting on a bottle of florel for a year or so now as I lost the males I was gonna use it on. Just now got what looks to be a solid male so I’ll have to check that out sometime. Thanks for all the info!

If you read folks that are reversing males using a particular concentration of Florel, consider tripling it.

I used to use these traits. Vigor. Stem run. I want a hollow stem with no pith. Unique terp on stem rub. Not first to produce pollen. Flower structure. Use Instinct.

Or… Reverse your best female using STS and make fem seeds.

Whoa, whoa, whoa…are we now able to reverse males into females and make male only seeds?

Reversed males actually make reg seeds, 1/2 will be males, 1/4 will be duds, and 1/4 will be females

I believe Ole @hempy has reversed a few males before, even smoked a few 🫠, though I’m pretty sure reversing a male is still not a sure-fire way to finding a breeding male keeper. That can only be achieved through progeny testing with multiple males.

Selecting a single male or chucking multiple males at once gives people a good chance of ending up with ornamental hemp. People will probably have better luck if they flipped a coin or select through “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe”.

This is my go-to method for deciding things I can’t decide on.

Oh, I like the structure of that one! Should be a solid male… only way to know for sure tho is to look at his kids

Named him Oscar yet?

No just The Trash Can Man. He is long gone but his pollen is in the freezer.

I recently read that some breeder, i forget who or whom, grows out and smokes the males to check for potency?

DJ Short talked about that. I’ve done it too. It’s how I knew what scents and high the male SSDD F2 BX1 carried and would potentially pass on to his progeny. He had the same scents and effects as the mom, just not as potent obviously. Gotta dry the balls completely. Sift out all the pollen you can. Still a bit harsh. Would recommend a dry herb vape or a water bong for smoothness but it might take away from the little nuances he might carry.

The proof will always be in the progeny,

@RookieBuds
ShaBud from 707 said he does that. I know my pineapple thai males from his stock actually gave me a slight buzz when I smoked em. (Nonreversed)
They were stinky and hollow stem too.

Huh maybe I’ll give my male from the Vortex run a QWISO wash before I chuck it
