I went digging around to see what sort of solutions commercial ones use, and after very brief research it looks like there are two main ones.

This sort of mechanism: Light Deprivation Pivot Arm Assembly Kit (2 Sides) – Hortitech Direct

And what amounts to a bunch of sections of automated curtains. Automated curtains are a staple of a lot of DIY home automation setups, so if you went that route, there are many guides you could reference.
