A once-in-a-million appearance of a black bear with white fur—known as a “spirit bear”—was captured on a trail cam in the Upper Peninsula. Those, I thought, were limited to the west coast of northern BC. I worked in Terrace a few times and was told there was one hanging around the town and they kind of adopted it as their mascot…then some kid shot it. They ran his family out of town. Not sure if its true or not.

It’s a mutation, not albino but lacking most pigments. The standard Gray squirrel comes in a rainbow of colors, usually a regional thing if there’s a population besides the odd ball.
Onley, IL is famous for their population of white squirrels.
Ya I think you’re right. There is a subspecies in BC though that is it’s own entity, the Kermode.
