i would say that since it said “light years away” and not “light years ago” it was specifically referring to distance, as it should be.

If those aliens at said distance were looking at earth at this moment, the image they’d be seeing was light that left our planet that long ago.

Not really, if it’s “Disc World”. The curve could show the horizontal and not the vertical curve. It depends on your depth perception.
