Its much further away than you think google maps is designed like a globe if you look at a globe from the side, the places on the Äquator are somewhat flat but as further down it looks smaller. I can’t explain it that well so heres a video
Its very interesting and a lot of people do not know that.

That’s the left hand side of the graph, the most commonly discussed. The effect is broader and accounts for the other end of the spectrum as well.
