Had it in a clamp and was across the garage getting bigger vice grips when it go BOOM.
Edit
just don’t get a jaw in the way.
Dude!
Seriously? That would take your head off!
Fella a knew had a bowling ball come through his windshield and smash his jaw, always had a smile though.

I am guessing it is a solid door? If so, the segmented “Roll Up” doors are not only safer to install/repair, but don’t twist or warp like the lift ups. Here in SoCal, all you ever saw were the one piece “Lift Up” doors, for a long time. Now, the earliest they can, folks are replacing them. First thing we did, 30+ years ago when no one else was. Expensive, at the time, but well worth it.
When dealing with spring torsion doors aint nothing safe.
Long long time ago I worked for a door company and owning a remodeling company biz later in life, Ive learned to respect them.
Be it segmented garage doors, big or little commercial or residential corrugated roll ups.
I can only imagine the force of a compressed garage door spring. I needed to put my door spring back in my truck and instead of just getting a special spring compressor and doing it the right way I decided to MacGyver it. Compressed it in a vise and ran 3 or 4 zipties through it. Compress - tighten ties - rinse - repeat. Was feeling all proud of myself leaving the shop holding the spring between my thumb and pointer finger when the ties snapped. Thumb took the brunt was nice and purple and hard almost immediately and tender for 2 weeks! Play stupid games…
Needless to say I have a healthy respect for springs now.
meh…just hit a trigger…the danger of messing with the spring brought to mind a time working in an electrical room next to the boilers and dryers…where all the banks of electric starters are. Not too far from the chlorine injectors where we used to change the tanks for the injectors.
That is a bit hairy with the door springs…wouldn’t be the first time I told a guy I’d watch from a distance and call if they need 911. Even use a stick to knock him off the thing if it was safe…but I wasn’t doing it.
Yeah VW, it was a solid door.
$1,100 got me a roll up and door opener.
Another guy in the break room knew a guy…Lots of guys at work do side jobs, especially when there’s no overtime.
Those that don’t usually post their toys for sale on the main board near the cafeteria.
At least they used to. Haven’t been back there since the vaxdemic started.
