Yeah, sure, they called Surfin’ Bird surf music, but it had a distinctly different flavor from any other surf music that I ever heard at the time. Like how Psychotic Reaction was so different than virtually all of the other music being made at the time. I grew up in L.A. and heard so fucking much surf music!
I don’t know what kind of music this is (thrash, etc), but to my old ears it actually sounds and feels like an updated version of Surfin’ Bird rather than some crappy cover.
