THIS aināt no country and western music, although I do love classic c&w/honky tonk. No, this is far more similar/related to big jazz and/or jump blues. And these are smoking great musicians!
Roly Poly features one of the finest vocalists I think Iāve ever heard, Tommy Duncan. I love the line, āhe likes everything from soup to hay.ā Itās a song about a young lad who has a serious appetite and is roly poly. What can I say, I have always loved novelty songs.
This is the first song I ever really loved, although I donāt remember loving it then. I couldnāt walk yet, but according to our parents and my older sisters, Iād haul myself up to a standing position at the record player and just rock out to this song, over and over, shaking the record player and making the record skip and shit. I apparently didnāt care that the record was skipping.
And for you health food folksā¦ āBlack strap molasses and the wheat germ bread, makes you live so long youāll wish you were deadā¦ā
Did you catch the line about Hadicol? Hadicol was a popular patent medicine. Basically, it was alcohol dressed up to be medicine. Lotta songs from the 1940s and early 1950s mention it.
Oh, and in addition to Danny on this recording are Jane Wyman, Jimmy Durante and Groucho Marx.
I fucking loved everything about Danny Kaye! In my opinion the guy was a fucking genius!
Just that feeling of freedom, beauty, nature - Stony Creek gets me every time.

Never heard Jeff in an interview. This is a pretty good one about his music and in particular a gig he played at Ronnie Scottsās. Lots of examples of his various playing techniques. Seems like a down to earth kinda guy with a modest sense of humor. Bon Voyage Jeff Beckā¦
Unfortunately, the track uploaded by @Calyxander coming on 4 years ago is no longer available, and itās just too great a song not to be available here.
Play it LOUD!
