I heard a podcast he was on and he claims he never set out to be in the comedy genre. He said CMT wouldn’t play his stuff and someone fought for him to be included in some awards show because he sold a ton of records. His manager called him one morning and said he was nominated for an award in the comedy section for how many units he sold and Wheeler was like “dammit man it’s not comedy… wait how many did it sell?! Ok it’s comedy!”.
