I just checked my DVD cases.
Out of 13 beans, only 1 has a tail, and it’s about 1/8" long after 48hrs.
That’s pretty slow based on my experience, and it seems universal across 2 diff strains.
We’ll let them go another few days, I’ll check them every afternoon.
I’ve been using wet paper towel method then in a baggy - and hanging them in the tents net pocket lol .
I’ve even thrown the wet bag in a cup in the tent with another cup on top
or floor of the tent and forgotten about them only to find them with really long taps !
Will choose one method for sure. The only warm place in my house is the modem. I’ve done that also reluctantly
I’ve done the DVD case twice now, and it’s growing on me. I’m not sure how much difference a straight tap root makes for a seedling, but at the very least, it can’t hurt and it doesn’t cost anything
Here’s the most recent. Put the beans in Monday at lunchtime, moved them to starting mix this morning.
As you can see, 6 have nice straight roots pointing to the bottom of the case. 2 didn’t pop, and there’s that one seed in the upper right corner of the case who decided to grow a root UP instead of DOWN…so it’s confused.
I usually simply place the seed directly into the medium (ProMix BX is better than the HP for seed starting), the only time that I do otherwise is if I suspect possibly diminished viability of the seeds I want to grow out.
Simple and effective.
It generally shouldn’t be so complicated with extra steps required. IMO.
The BX has less perlite, so the finer consistency is a little better for the teeny tiny non cannabis seeds that I start. The HP certainly works fine on larger seeds like cannabis.
The thing that started me down the paper towel route is that several years ago I was sowing directly to seed starter with tomatoes. I was having a terrible germination rate…couldn’t figure out why.
So I went to paper towels for my tomatoes, and my germ rate went to near 100%…so I’ve stayed with paper towel ever since.
Maybe I just had a bad batch of tomato seeds that year…dunno.
Earlier this year I popped a bunch of seeds, I think 30 in the first batch. 6 were of 1 strain, and only 1 popped. Popped 8 more of them a week later, same strain, and again, 1 popped. Every other strain did fine. So did it save me anything?..just saved me filling more solo cups and taking more space in my little grow bathroom upstairs.
As for disruption during xplant, I don’t think moving them from the towels to medium causes any hit…and if it did, it’s likely offset by having a nice, straight tap root in the correct orientation to start off with.
This is my second pop using the dvd cases. Not sure I’ll bother going forward. 1st time almost every seed had a straight, vertical root, but this batch was all over the place for some reason. I had a few seeds that had a tap coming out of the bottom that immediately did a circle around the helmet,.
So thinking I’ll just go back to wet paper towels over my living room LED lamp
