It’s usually called potting mix. Here are a few examples:
Well it sure as hell isn’t peat, that comes from a bog not a forest. Leaf mold, wood chips, and cold compost for the most part. Maybe a small amount of manure.

Yeah potting mix is very often peat based with some compost and aeration. It’s cheaper.
True, I do replenish (reamend) the soil after each grow using premixed Build-A-Soil nutrient pack. But aside from that the entire grow is just water only. I’ve not messed around with teas or top dressing or anything except non-PH’d tap water.
Ha! Touché
Used to buying fox farm and theirs says soil, guess I really ate my words on that one hahaha
There’s def plenty of manure in a forest though, deers, insects, birds and all sorts of wildlife just shitting all over the place lol unless they had a designated restroom I was unaware of hahaha some of the best microbes comes from insect poo
As far as peat goes we’re both right, most of the bagged stuff comes from canana peat bogs but it also forms in peatlands, wetlands, peat swamp forest’s,etc
Lots of homeless camps in the woods around these parts.
Or coir!! I’m done with peat in my mixes! Had enough of the hydrophobic properties of it. For it being cheaper they sure charge a lot for premixed bags these days. Made my own this year going coir based and my soil cost was 20% of what I’d spend going fox farms and all their peat
I meant cheaper for them to produce, not for them to lower price points for us
I really like peat but I don’t make mixes of it. I buy it by the bale and it’s got some perlite in it already. All my nutes get mixed in with my water
I call it soil too, just saying technically it’s not. Sounds better than mixed medium and is shorter too.
Mmmm humanure…
It’s really quite disgusting. Not the shit but the toilet paper. If they bury it it pops up from the “soil” like a beautiful flower.
Practice experiment research lol its a constant learning exp
Sure would be nice, fox farm upped their price 5 bucks a bag in my area this year
Peat been making me crazy the last year watching my teas roll right off the medium and out the sides of my fabric grow bags with the hydrophobic crap. Been getting some humic acid in my teas to help with it and the main solution is just blasting the soil with a hose the day before a feeding so it’s already wet and easier to absorb
Try a wetting agent, I’ve been using the Quillaja powder from BAS and love it. I’ve used both yucca and soap nuts in the past as well. In fact, Pro Mix cones with a wetting agent added.
Yeah man I hear you. It’s one of the reasons I’m not a fan of fabric bags. Maybe it’s just because I’m a peat guy
I use plastic pots and I find that my peat forms a little puddle shape at the top to aid in watering/absorbtion. I don’t do this on purpose it just sort of happens. I just need to water a bit slowly.
I do use yucca and humic acid for it already, at this point its just gonna be a matter of time till my 1100 gallons of soil gets all mixed together with half being coir based and original half being a mix of all sorts of shit lol original half is all in use on tomatoes currently and 400 gallons of new with some old mixed in,in crates cooking
This is my favorite thread on OG right now. I love this forum and have met some awesome people, but my lawd it’s almost too nice haha. This thread has some edge to it and I love it haha.
@ReikoX have you ever tried this stuff? I’m thinking about using it for my sunflowers.
cool! got any pics? what kind of maters?
No I haven’t, sorry. I make my own mixes by hand. I then have it lab tested and amend accordingly between cycles.
Nothing wrong with some healthy discussion.
That stuff is crap, way to much wood chips in it, I wouldn’t suggest any of the Lowe’s or home Depot stuff, especially the Kelloggs. Just make ur own for way cheaper mixing 25% peat or coir, 50%compost(I personally like mushroom compost and Scotts humus and manure mixed half and half) and 25% perlite. Then I’ll throw Dr earth herbs and veggie blend fertilizer at 1 cup per 10 gallon or 1.5 cu ft(9.6 gallon)
Ohhhhhh I don’t know why it never clicked that I could use soap nuts. Never seen it get mentioned re: wetting agent, so you just blew my damn mind. I need to do that.
