@CanuckistanPete, I wasn’t actually looking for “The Raven Steals the Light.” I was looking for another Bill Reid book, “Our of the Darkness,” one of the most beautiful books I have ever read, when I noticed “The Raven Steals…” on the shelf at Powell’s Books in Portland, OR. (Shout out to a great bookstore!)
“Out of the Darkness” is primarily a book of B&W photos of decaying totem poles, long houses and other things associated with PNW Native American culture. As I recall, it’s about 60% pictures, 40% narrative. I first read it when I was in college around 1988. Maybe a decade later I went back to the school’s library and it was gone. My guess is it wasn’t popular enough to keep, and they got rid of it to make more shelf space.
This meme is particularly relevant to one of Mr. Reid’s observations, although not necessarily dying specifically in the arctic or Inuits.
