In truth I’m not sure that’s even the biggest factor. Run off, no run off, no big deal.
I’d be more concerned about proper amount of water for pot size. Watering a seedling to run off in a 5G pot - bad idea.
Watering a plant to run off that is properly sized for its pot - no big deal.
I like my pots to need water every 3-4 days. Sometimes this is not realistic but it’s what I like.
I used to water to run off but I don’t bother anymore.
If you are used charged soil run off is a bad idea because you’re throwing away nutes.
Aloe is magic and highly underrated. This is making me realize I need to start adding aloe again as I killed all my indoor house plants last spring but definitely need to get some aloe going again , I have one but it’s small although super healthy, needs an uppot
As far as yields in soil, I’d say you should be able to get a half pound with two plants in 3 gallon fabric pots. I do water only-veg, then run GH micro/bloom 1:2 pretty much all the way to harvest.
Just with the talk about soil becoming hydrophobic, for future reference to anyone reading this, I thought I’d drop in a list of things you can add to water to help lower its surface tension and allow it to soak into the medium more efficiently.
Aloe (as mentioned),
Soap nuts,
Quillaja (my favourite),
Horse chesnuts/conkers, even the leaves can be used to a lesser extent.
Yucca extract.
I’m sure there are more, but basically anything containing saponins will do the job.
the reason the bottom fed plants grow bigger is because its literally impossible to figure out exactly when the plant needs water by yourself.
seriously dont buy 20 bottles and bags of crap, just buy an octopot and stop watering the plants and they will grow bigger lol.
Or…Buy a tank, a tray and a easy2go valve + some textile pots and you have the octopot system with more flexibility for up to 50 plants( depending on pot and tray size) for the price of one or two octopots.
i am an idiot but makes sense: the blumats grow bigger and are healthier than hand watered, then the octos/etc do even better. the answer is staring us in the face: take ourselves out of the equation and yield/quality goes up.
i dont know the reason for any of the scientific stuff to be clear thats just my brain unfiltered.
at some stage wouldnt getting a big 3d printer be economical to just print all your own parts?
there is a technique called low stress training, where you tie the top node to the bottom of the plant after CAREFULLY nudging it (I say carefully or it will break and you will have to regrow it over a 2w-3w) and all branches because of auxins will serve as a top cola
found out about that on old school og before the raid
This ain’t @Foetidal beauty salon. It’s adding a drop of Castile soap to break the surface tension of the water so it works its way in all the crevices. Same as any saponin.
If you’re using Peatmoss and let it dry a tad too much, then it gets hydrophobic.
