It would be interesting if one of the sponsors here got on board and sent out 1 auto feminized seed of the same strain to each of the contestants.
Every auto strain i’ve run has had slight pheno difference’s to some with quite large differences, so it would come down to the luck of the draw and skill of the grower. Plus shipping out individual seeds to everyone who wanted to participate could get pricey real quick.
Not a bad idea, someone should start a thread where everyone runs some Solo cups just to further the knowledge of micro-growing.
That’s not a competition though.
I’m with this idea. It will further advance the knowledge of everyone here.
How about the feminized seeds, do they also produce pheno differences? I don’t know anything about auto and feminized seeds.
Just was thinking of the best way to create a level playing field vs. who grows the prettiest genetics. It seems then it becomes more of a genetics competition than a micro grow competition.
Sorry to interrupt, carry on.
I would like to see a limit on entrys per person say 4 to filter out males instead of being able to grow 100 and choose at the end.
Yeah with feminized seeds as well, its no different than photoperiods but it depends on what generation they are and how they were bred. First gen of a cross of two different types is pretty uniform, but next generation after that, or a first inward cross of the same genetics its a mix up for what you get. Only way to really have them somewhat equal would be a self pollinated feminized plant, as its more or less a clone of the parent plant just in seed form, but most don’t make seed that way as you get quite a bit less.
Maybe tack that off as a good idea for future endeavors. Myself if i have some personal genetics i think worthy when that time comes i’ll freely donate them to those who want to try, shipping is just the pain especially world wide.
There’s no such thing as an interruption in an open forum, your opinion is weighed on the same scale as everyone else. That was mentioned the first time around too, in the future we could have a “sponsored strain” so to speak, that gets distributed to each participating member so it’s apples to apples.
I like the entry limit idea as well, just for simplicity sake. On the other hand, if someone is really willing to devote that level of resources, maybe they deserve the win? Lmao.
what are the rules for using a clone?
@Viva_Mexico I’m thinking like Mr. Sparkle mentioned, if you want to put a 4ft clone in a 16oz cup you’re going to have a whole list of problems to contend with, and that should more than make up for any advantage the size might offer. The current agreed upon rules seem to be only that:
- The plant must be fully contained in the 16oz cup, it can’t be used as a net pot for a DWC for instance.
- Once a week updates, preferable on the same day each week but a little leeway is afforded.
- All plants start approximately the same date. A full week seems fair to work around people’s schedules, but more than that seems excessive imo.
Those are the easy ones though. The trouble is with - end date, do we just wait for the last person to finish flowering to judge? Do we want a set in stone date where we judge based on the competition up to that point?
And with clones, do they have roots or are they cut on day one? Cuz I suck at cloning, and my clones will just be rooting by the time we are voting.
Also there is the entry limit question.
What’s your thoughts viva?
Im in got the mouse problem tooken care of haha an id say you can start with how many then when they are sexed you limit to four you know it would really suck for someone to get all males an automatically be out cause of dumb lucky
i was kinda assuming the thing that made it a competition was just that there’s a vote at the end and someone wins something, i prefer the few rules anything goes kind of competitions, i agree that’s when innovation is at it’s best. if everyone does the exact same thing it’s pretty boring. no matter how many rules we make, growing skill will never be the only variable, unless we all used clones from the same mother. i guess i was thinking more of a contest then competition. it is just meant to be fun, no need to get super competitive and restrictive. these rules seem fine
rules from icmag contest
RULES
Read Closely
- All participants must use an individual Party Cup (AKA Beer Cup) max volume is 16 oz
- All participants will use a clone, seed, or seedling of any Cannabis variety, male or female. Please specify strain/hybrid/breeder lineage in as much detail as possible (or even if it’s a bag seed; tell what kind of herb was it in the bag the seed came from).
- Participants can enter up to 5 plants (one plant per cup), and will choose the best one to be judged.
- Seedlings may be germinated or not at the time of entry; Clones maybe rooted or not at time of entry as well.
- All roots must remain inside the cup for the duration of the challenge and may require trimming. Any type of feeding is allowed, but if roots grow out the bottom of the container they must be trimmed immediately and not be outside the container.
- Harvest must be no more than 16 weeks from today, that’s November 28, 2017 . You can enter and finish ANY time between now and and the end of the challenge but MUST be harvested with finished product pictures and smoke report by November 28th,
- Keep the photos and updates regular, one per week at least. Missing 3 or more weeks without any update disqualifies a contestant, so keep up steady updates for maximum participation and to be considered in the winners poll.
- Winner will be decided by a poll posted after the challenge is completed.
- It is expected of all participants to keep a good attitude in the spirit of community and sharing of knowledge and experiences. Let’s all have FUN.
Looks like we ended up with the same ruleset they did. Lmao.
So the last order of business seems to be, do we run twelve week contests 4x a year, or sixteen week contests 3x a year?
i kinda like the idea of 16 oz maximum, opening options for 12 oz beer can or 6-8oz yogurt cup, i kind of want to do a yogurt cup, maybe i’ll do one on my own for fun
I will do it with you, i wanna do a yogurt cup too…
so you want to water 3 or 4 times a day… 12 oz can is bad enough…
Aight, I think we have it than. I’ll edit the first post to reflect the current consensus.
I will be breaking apart a rockwool cube to use as medium, not too much water not too much air. That will allow me to water once a day during veg and twice a day during flow…
Looks like you got a plan this round too.
trying to imitate chipped coco… lmao
