Winter Solo Cup Competition - Ideas

Hear ye, hear ye, seeing as the first Solo-cup Competition is coming to a close it seems a good time to get a show of hands for the next round. The competition will run from the 1st of January 2018 until the 1st of May 2018, when the winner will be chosen by popular vote, based on the entirety of your grow show.

The rules are only:

1)-The plant must be grown in a 16oz/48cl “Solo Cup” (or smaller)
2)-If roots extend out of the cup, they must be pruned.
3)-Seed, clone, micropropagation, all’s fair in love and war
4)-An entry limit of 6 plants, (preferably named / labelled / color coded, but not required)
5)-Updates must be posted weekly, in the designated thread. There will be leeway afforded to a reasonable extent.

last time was from seed, that may have been the only other rule. i’d prefer fully mature clone to guarantee flowering when flipped but idc really either way. i’m not sure if 12 weeks gives enough time to veg, flower, harvest, dry and cure so maybe 3 a year (every 4 months) or hold the poll once everyones finished even if it’s after the next one has already started, not sure if that would get too confusing tho.

i would like to participate and will offer a TBD prize for this round - likely beans but am not ruling out other possibilities

It was mentioned before that this one would be a clone run, but I’m hella biased because I have clones ready to go. We’ll have to see what everyone else thinks.

i am OK with growers choice. i don’t have any clones and won’t by jan 1st, unless i snip a lower bud site and start revegging now, so will need to use seed

if it’s clone only then it will be hard for many to start by Jan 1… and seeds will take longer and unless it’s fem you always have the males to deal with… I happen to know @legalcanada would have a nice clone to use if it he was able to start any time in Jan… so my .02 would be to let contestants start any time in january so all can bring their best to compete.

My vote is clone or seed, but the clone has to be cut when the competition starts. I would also propose a 4 month time frame. Personally I would let anyone join in after the start date so long as they finish by the end date.

There are other reasonable options?

Last round was seed only

There must be a mandatory pic of the root ball every update. To avoid suspicions and/or misunderstandings. I feel we should all join on one set date, no joining after the set date, people wil use that to their advantage one way or the other.

I will participate, so long as everyone joins the same date, we tried to make an exception on this contest currently running and it didn´t work out.

FAIR PLAY my people, FAIR PLAY!

what advantage would joining late possibly give someone, if poll is held on set date regardless?

and as for picture of rootball, i’m not going to be taking my plant out of the cups. you can see the cups sitting on plastic with nothing extending out, that should be sufficient…

Alright, you guys have a blast then…

Will not participate unless rules are set in stone, if there are objections it´s because of something.

What is the problem in everyone joining on the same date?
Why do we need leeway in a contest where everyone should do things right?

Now, i understand why some people didn´t wanna join the first round to begin with…Experience.

 I don’t think anyone was ever serious about doubting the results, though we did joke around a few times. :joy:

The question is, do we keep the two thread format? You miss out on the banter, which is my favorite part. But the thread is cleaner with only weekly updates.

some people may not hear about it until afterwards, may not have room or be able/ready at the time, what is the problem with people starting late if it ends at the same time? i fail to see any advantage that would provide. i mean idc i’m ready to go for jan 1st but more the merrier right

I will be cheering for you brother, you got my support to win next round!

By announcing a new topic, if someone doesn’t have their email set to receive every single action on this site, they’ll have to keep up or keep their seat.

yes i don’t care either way, however the majority decides i will follow! but we got 2 weeks or so to decide the rules so best to hash it out now. i also would abide by whoever makes the thread makes the rules. don’t really care one way or other about start date, but i do think people should be allowed choice of seed or clone. i’m OK with no ‘pre-rooting’, taking the cutting on 1st when others begin germinating sounds fair.

So from I can tell, everyone is currently in agreement on:

  • Plants must be contained within the cup
  • From seed or from clone is fine, as long as there are no early starts.
  • Weekly updates are required.

Still up in the air –
Start date – (I think there needs to be a set in stone start date if we’re trying to run them more than twice a year. We could let anyone start whenever, but then in what sense do we have a competition?)

End date – the current competition has a bit of an issue with this as well, because we’re dealing with living plants (read, Divas) that grow how they want, when they want. I think we should have a set in stone end date as well, and the plants will be judged based on the run, as opposed to where they land at the finish line.

Anything else to be contested?
Maybe a height limit on clones?

Sounds good, myself i would be running from seed if i entered, but would be done in 8-9weeks being that i would use an auto.

I like the idea of a specific start and end date, or say a start week and end week as some may have issues starting on a specific date.

As for height of clones, a plant can only support and grow as much as their root space will allow, so if a person wants to put a 4foot “cutting” in a solo cup i say good luck to that. But if thinking down that route an idea would be say no bigger than the height of one cup for easy reference, or less.

And yeah definitely roots must be contained in the cup or trimmed if they escape, with a couple shots to support that, or maybe on a by call basis for photos by other members. As there are definitely ways a person could fudge it if they weren’t being honest to the contest.

if your going to have a good number of peeps giving it a go you need to have where peeps can jump in and join when their grow allows them to… and instead of trying to level the field between seeds vs clones have two categories…I say don’t worry all the details… keep the rules simple… I’m for seeing how and what they can do to get the most they can out of a solo cup… as long as they can keep the roots in the cup I say let the grower do what they want… we all just might learn something… I think I could get an ounce easy out of a clone in a solo cup… to many rules spoil what can be learned… and if somebody wants to cheat somehow… let them… ain’t gonna change much except my opinion of them…

this was my fist microgrow from many years ago with a 12oz can… got almost an ounce
