C_in_CT's basement hydro

Oh yeah, I am a herm magnet. I often will stick 8 S1s of various strains in the same tent. At least a couple of them will usually throw some kind of nanner or balls. I rarely do a run without them anymore. The only way I would know to avoid them is to stick with a strain or clone you know.

I usually do a “flower run” on occasion where I drop a pack of regs from a good breeder like Jaws, for example, and grow out the girls to stock up on smoke. That way my normal runs are for funs. Admittedly I am currently very blessed with space.

You’re not alone!!

I appreciate the support! I guess it’s part of the rite of passage of being a grower.

Red Snake seeds arrived from US3RNAM3 today! And I have some on the way from Vegabom.

I think my plan is as follows:

  • Keep an eye on the remaining plant (I’ll still call it “plant 2” for continuity’s sake)
  • Remove any male bits that I catch
  • Once the other seeds arrive, I’ll probably get the 3 started that I want to run next (one of each of the giveaway seeds, and one of something else)
  • Once those are ready for the tent, if I don’t have the other one running, I’ll just harvest Plant 2 at that point, regardless of maturity. If I do have the other one running, I can let Plant 2 run its course.
  • If it gets to a point where it feels like I’m not able to reduce pollen risk significantly, I’ll just pull it and try to salvage what I can from it, even if extremely immature.

As always, it’s entirely possible that I’ll post in like 3 hours saying I went ahead and chopped it or something. We’ll see how it goes! Having a plan is the first step. Abandoning the plan is often the second step  I feel like 80% of my posts have “we’ll see how it goes” in them at least once, but that’s how I’m trying to approach this.

Kill it pronto.

Edit: It’s already gone. Haha. If you deal with that again, spray the pollen sacs with water to kill the pollen if you’re worried about shaking any pollen loose while trying to get the plant out of your tent. If you like to be really exact about it, wet some cotton balls and stick them on some large tweezers or something. Then, smoosh all of the pollen sacs with the wet cotton balls.

This is me too! :joy: Love a good pivot! Good luck on step 2!

You running fems or regs next if regs ya might wanna start few extras

The seeds I purchased are white label fems, the ones from vegabom are reg, not sure on the red snake, but I’d guess regs. I am fine with one of each, once I have separate tents for veg and flower, I’ll be able to just cycle things through at whatever pace they need. So if I need to replace anything, I’ll be able to do it without waiting for a new full run.

I’m not a “start 15, grow out 1” person, at least not at this stage  Eventually perhaps! I’m extremely bad at waiting for things, and also I am trying to use this whole process as an exercise in getting better at that.

lol only saying because in the packs iv been popping at moment getting 2/5 females and them now iv narrowed down to two males I need to make a decision on lol structure or pure stank dunno lol hard

Being an adhd person bad at waiting for things, I often question why I have multiple hobbies that required at least some form of delayed gratification:
smoking meat
baking bread (especially sourdough)
3d printing (some prints can be days long, I tend to avoid those though)
and now growing plants that take months to reach maturity

Could you collect pollen from both? Mark buds with colored string around the branch and pollinate with each? “red buds this male, blue buds that male”? That might be more hassle than you want to mess with though

Two different varieties couldn’t keep the offspring true it would be who knows what crossed with what one where lol

I usually start 3 regs at a time. This gives me the highest probability of getting a female plant. That’s probably not accurate at all but I haven’t gotten an all male pop yet. Since you’re popping fems with it I think you’re going to be fine even with a male from reg.

Delayed gratification is always so much more satisfying though. That immediate stuff doesn’t last anywhere near long enough for me.

Anyway back to the thread lol where did you get plans ideas about the flood drain your using I was looking at possibly setting up a table I know hydro well just never done flood and drain don’t know too much about it

I read all over the place honestly. I cobbled together my design from a lot of ideas I saw.

The bins I’m using were selected because 3 fit perfectly in a 2x4 tent even with the tube frame (2x4 commercially available flood tables do not).

I opted for bell siphon because I was going to use a loop siphon, but couldn’t get it to work reliably, so I redesigned it with the bell. That’s worked flawlessly, I’ve been surprised and pleased with that.

I did the sump underneath because I didn’t want to deal with fighting water temps inside the tent and I try to avoid bending/crouching/kneeling as much as physically possible because my body is garbage. I sized the sump tub to hold more water than all 3 bus tubs’ full non-hydroton volume, just in case the sump pump failed.

I had little floating water level indicators in there, if I’d still had them in, I would have noticed the water staying in the bins faster, so I’ll probably put those back when I reset everything.

I run it on scheduled feeds, some versions are a constant slow fill and then it siphons out automatically and then keeps filling. I didn’t want that, because I didn’t want to risk a siphon failure and flooding my tent.

There’s a weird dearth of information about F&D, it’s fairly simple, but other versions of hydro get more focus.

I am absolutely happy to answer any and all questions about my setup.

Yes iv run nft tables Dwc buckets but never really looked into the flood and drain guess being in big buckets can get a good sized plant I just hate having excess pots of cocoa to get rid of all the time so been leaning back water

Yeah, My original plan was to keep the roots small and keep small plants, that went out the window this grow, but I should be able to achieve it next time, now that I’ve modified how the pot sits in there. @luxton is doing aquaponics, but he’s got an interesting setup you might want to look at as well.

I went with hydroton since it meant I wouldn’t have to replace medium/substrate very often. Once I have enough for all of the bins, I’m set for the foreseeable future. And keeping roots contained in a small pot means way less hassle trying to clean them and prep for the next run. Also means I can move the plants around as needed within the bins (like if it was growing lopsided or something), vs just growing free in hydroton.

Hoocho has some good flood and drain videos / designs, and talks about how they work.

Would there be any interest in a step by step about how I set up the bus tubs and start seeds and whatnot as I set more up for the other tent / next run? I didn’t have my log up when I was doing that stuff last time.

I’d definitely have a read

I’m going to work on a cleaner / easier to maintain setup for the new tent and then set up the other tent the same way when it’s empty.

  • Velcro on the shelf to hold the panda film, which will be a massive upgrade over what I have going on with that currently.
  • Either magnets or velcro to hold the screen for catching bits that fall off the plants.
  • Some form of “high cfm bar” equivalent on the side walls and back, possibly something with paracord since I already have a bunch of that.
  • Going to redesign the fill hose holders and the piece they empty into
  • Have been tossing around ideas for the duct openings that my cords and hoses go through, to make them light-tight vents but also let the cords in, hoping to finalize that soon.

So next run should hopefully be even easier in most ways. There weren’t a lot of “omg I need that to be different” things that came up that I haven’t already solved.

lol if it makes you feel better I just been picking naarnas off one of mine it’s been going way to long I’m probably gonna rip it before it pollinates something else in there call it a loss

I find this is the best way in life, It builds in Psychological room for difficulties and still lets me approach things with a child like sense of wonder :love_you_gesture:
