The Salt Test

@BarrieButsers suggested doing a salt test with the new hygrometers to check their accuracy, hey, why not?

Setup
Basically a tablespoon and a teaspoon (15ml) of salt in a container plus a teaspoon (5ml) of water (any will do). Mix into a paste and place in a sealed container with the hygrometer and it should level out at 75%.
My ambient RH is about 32%

I went with a zip-lock sandwich bag. Two days later they have settled out at 63%.

Thinking about it, I wondered if I was getting shafted by the porosity of the plastic (they have micro-holes, sometimes a lot).
So I double bagged it in a large freezer bag. I also placed a hygrometer in the outer bag.

Results
Well guess what? The sandwich bag leaks like a sieve & the hygrometers in the inner bag are now at 72%, that’s within the prescribed +/- 3% so, a successful test.

Improvements
Use a gasketed snap-lid container instead of plastic zip-lock bags

Thanks for conducting the test, those are some pretty decent results considering the cost of the device!

hey @Gpaw can you post a link to the brand of hygrometer you bought? there are a ton of white labeled renamed options on the big A, so im curious which ones you went for that are performing so well in your accuracy tests

Now this is the Canadian price (27.99) so that about tree-fiddy USD

Hey @BarrieButsers , that was fun side project, thanx!

There’s a guy on ebay who sells used Inkbird hygrometers with batteries by the half dozen. Supposedly he gets medical shipments that require the humidity and temperature be documented and they’re used one time for shipping and then he sells them off. Not sure about shipping to Canada but he sells 6 of them for $13 shipped in the US.

I mistyped originally. He sells them by the half dozen!

That’s why weed always dries out in sandwich baggies. I use the plastic bags in cereal boxes, for shipping weed out to my daughter, they don’t breath like the zip lock bags, otherwise your cereal would lose its crunch

That’s a sweet deal, Inkbird sells them 13USD each. :+1:

This is what I’ve been using with great success. They are definitely a bit more expensive. Think I’ll grab some of the ones y’all been discussing. Thanks @Gpaw for the great read! Super informative!

Something I screwed up on was not posting where I got the “flour mixed with pollen for storage idea”.

Development_and_Optimization_of_a_Germination_Assa.pdf (3.8 MB)

There… Now that’s all better… :crossed_fingers: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

{edit} Another takeaway from that paper is the later pollen looses potency quickly and probably shouldn’t be preserved.

I’ve bought from him before and they’re legit. I asked him yesterday what type of materials they were shipped with by his company just out of curiosity and it’s new bloodbags with the anticoagulant gel in them. He sent a pic too and not only are those things sealed obviously but they were in a plastic bag as well. I just wanted to make sure they weren’t shipped with any kid of chemical or anything I wouldn’t want resting against my buds so all good.
