Give me a shout if you want to borrow my separator.
Is that sorta like a board stretcher.
A board stretcher like this?
Happy shuckin’ @Kavman killer work man
What the standard procedure when shucking seeds? I assume you let the buds dry out totally and gently crush them up with your hands? I’ve seen those blower separators online that basically let the seeds fall and blow the debris away, but I imagine they do something like that first.
I’m going to try making some seeds this season so it’s about time I start learning the tricks.
You nailed it: let the buds go super crispy dry and then break up and sift away the chaff from the seeds. Lots of ways to do it, one of those separators being the absolute fastest and lowest effort.
I dry it for 14 days, then in the freezer for a half hour, and the bud powderizes off the seeds. Quick work that way.
@Kavman hey brother! I just wanted to say what a great job you’ve done! The TF crosses sound amazing! Hope you’re doing well.my friend!
Thanks for the tip @Enjoi802 I have a fan blowing in the room I am drying them in and it’s only about 60 - 65 degrees in there but humidity is super low. The house is super dry here in the winter time. Not the best conditions for curing herb but makes this seed run drying process speed up quite a bit. Plants that I have done so far were bone dry in a week to 10 days depending on bud density. After screening the seeds I put them in little paper sandwich bags to ensure they are completely dry before I begin storing them. Nothing I have collected so far have been sealed up yet. Not really sure how long is too long to dry or if that is even such a thing. Long term storage is something I should be researching as well. More than likely they will be broken down into several smaller containers and then I will work out of one container at a time. Thermal cycling the seeds can’t be a good thing.
Yeah man thanks. We need get together this summer at some of those nice beaches near you. I am sure you know of some good spots.
So I overwinter seeds before storing, but for best storage one should dry the seeds completely, which generally takes about 14 days. Sound like you got a good heat source in the house so should of hit that marks when you were getting them out the buds. A few more days doesn’t hurt though. Then you have about a year or so to do as you please before long term storage is deemed necessary. Which then depending on what you want to do with them, they go into the freezer for indefinite storage, and In the refrigerator for prolonged, so have no drop in viability in the seeds in the refrigerator for at least 5-7 years as long as the refrigerator isn’t opened much causing temps to swing. Also freezers, gotta be careful. Some use a defrost (warming cycle) which most folks don’t know. If it’s a older fridge no worries. If it’s a newer one, doesn’t hurt to find out if it does defrost cycling lol. Glad to hear your making quick work of it. I find that it’s a good chance to find the plant that sticks out, because if she stinks with seeds, she blows ya away with out!
Great tips for keeping our treasures alive and viable @Enjoi802 ! Thanks!
Thanks for the detailed response @Enjoi802. I can’t wait to start grinding that Temple Flo to dust and collect her precious little eggs.
Looks like a great run. Sorry I missed out on this one. Prob woulda been a while before I coulda got to it. Well done. Carry on.
Good tips here already. Especially love the freezer idea from @Enjoi802 im gonna borrow that one this time.
I like to dry completely, then crumble everything as good as possible with gloves on and trying not to smash seeds. Then pull out all the small stems I can. I dont pull out any foliage. I let the separator do that work.
Next i run the ground material thru the separator. Slow and even so the plant material gets a chance to separate. I do this about 5 to 10 times all the while pulling little stems each time. Each batch only takes several minutes for a few thousand seed batch. So the whole separator process for me is only 20 to 30 minutes per strain. I get about 99% of foliage out and about 80% immature seeds. Then I hand pick out the rest.
Conversely Dj just drys to medium moisture level so its still spongy. Then he presses or squeezes out the seeds. He leaves a fair bit behind but doesnt have to mess with sepsrating plant matter or too many immature seeds.
I did this method with one and it definitely was quicker and less messy. Surprisingly satisfying process. But like you said you may miss a few seeds with this process but every one that squishes out is a keeper. I will be doing the Temple Flo this afternoon/evening. So the seed count should be known soon.
Well now I gotta try that sometime, I could actually see having your fingers get tired trying to do a whole plant that way though
Ok so seeds have been shucked and cleaned. I weighed out a gram of seeds off one plant and counted 48 seeds to a gram. Weighed out all the seeds and it equals a metric shit ton. So I guess the thing to do is play a little game of guess how many seeds. Obviously I will not count them all I will be using the formula I explained earlier for an approximation that I will use for this game. You may ask what’s the prize. Well that’s easy seeds and lots of them and pollen from my Flo x white widow and Temple Flo as well not like you will need it with all the seeds but it saves from wasting space with a male. Good luck
I’m gonna guess roughly 3k seeds.
