CrunchBerries’Probiotic SIP Thread

I think some of us Michiganders might have issues with these statements.

Spend a year here and see how long winter feels and how short the growing season really is.

Damn @nube, looks like you had hell of a spot there!! Looks awesome, had no idea there were beaches like that in Michigan.
Glad you had a great time :sunglasses:

Does anyone here amend their SIP’s using down to earth products over craft blend?I’m curious how much kelp , neem crab meal you add into an EB? I was thinking of maybe just following the mofo no till recommendations of 1/2 -1 cup of each per cu/f

Are you amending virgin soil or ROLS? I have an initial amend recipe at the top of this thread. I use a 1/4 of this after the initial amend of virgin soil.

Down To Earth brand is expensive compared to buying amendments in bulk. I buy my amendments in bulk and make my own ‘Craft Blend.’

It’s a hybrid if you will. I took the soil brick from the EB Jr, and put it into the larger EB and filled it in with build a soil 3.0 . I have tons of dte stuff in stock still as it’s what’s most readily available to me.

In their defense, they do sell most of their amendments in 25-50 pound bags as well. But yes, no sense in buying amendments in 5 pound boxes.

Definitely. I can get a 50 lb bag of Oraganic Alfalfa Meal at the feedstore for the same price as a 4 lb bag/box of Alfalfa Meal from DTE. I understand the retailers are also marking it up but still worth keeping in mind. Seek out feed-stores over grow-stores…

Happy belated Bday @CrunchBerries!

My local feed store only sells DTE brand amendments (in small boxes and large bags), unless I am buying alfalfa pellets that are made for horse or livestock consumption (which I have used in a hot compost pile).

Oh yeah I like those pellets for compost as well. Been using them mixed with shredded comfrey and covering w/ worm castings lately as well and am liking the slower release nature of the pellets. Probably not the best for mixing in soils, but for top dressing they seem pretty good. I imagine the bulk DTE at your feed-store is substantially cheaper than Amazon, grow-stores and garden centers as well as you indicated.

Boy, had I read and read and read your initial set up recommendations, I’d have saved myself a lot of headaches in the Jr’s my last go!

Reading is Fun-damental! I wrote the first section with the intention that a brand new grower could follow and have a great grow. May be a bit wordy. Glad it helped!

So just quarter section 10 if I’m in a cu / f , yeah?

Sorry. Can you rephrase your answer in the form of a question?

I would just add you probably want to copy and paste what you are referencing. There are a ton of guides posted and they were from awhile ago.

I think they are referencing this :point_up_2:

Yo crunch! Just cut down the San marzanos that we’re in an EB on the patio, gonna sterilize the old girl and then I think the next run I’m making the switch! Reassure me again that my chapin sprayer won’t go unused

So taking your recipe in part 10. If I’m reading it correctly , it’s amending for four cubic feet , and I’m in one cubic feet of soil , so just quarter it , correct?

You are correct sir thank you
