Egg cartons for cloning purposes

Anybody here ever used egg cartons for cloning?
If so, how did it turn out? Any nuances to using them?
Cheers.

I tried them one time to germinate seeds. Didn’t work so well. Never tried it with cloning.

I wonder if there is difference?
I’m also curious about ideal clone sizing? I’ve seen people vouch for for all sizes of starter clone, from 2 - 5 nodes.

I have done lots of sizes. I feel the larger ones seem to do better in the long run. Smaller ones give you less room for error.

Yeah Thanks for the feedback… I am experiencing that right now. The smaller ones and the stretchier ones seem to be less forgiving.

The beefier the cutting, while having the least woody feel seems to work the best for me so far…

My first cloning attempt, this summer, I used a styrofoam egg carton as a holder. I turned it upside down and cut holes for root riot cubes. I did not use a dome. I went 3/3.

I have used styro egg cartons many times for starting seeds with ProMix or Jiffy seed starter mix.

Most of the time however I use them for starting non cannabis seeds, flowers, herbs etc. I have used them for cannabis seeds a few times and they worked fine, but I prefer larger 8 to 16 oz containers for starting seeds, and I would not use them for cloning anything, they’re just too small.

The smallest cloning starters I have used with great success are Jiffy 7 Peat pellets in a tray under a dome… they have worked very well for me.

Yeah thanks… I should have clarified that I have the cardboard ones. Nonetheless, I believe your discussion about sizing is very useful.
Cheers.

The cardboard ones may mold up on you, well they did for me.
I buy a sleeve of 1 or 2 ounce plastic cups, that you rinse your mouth out with in the bathroom.
Cost’s about $2.00 for 100, then I mash some perlite with same amount of compost, packed in nice and tight, again, cheap and cheaper, poke a few weep holes, poke in a/few cutting’s, or seed, and away you go.
I use and toss them.
The biggest draw back of cloning trays/hoods/ez-cloners they need a good cleaning or sanitizing after you use them a couple of times.
Or you will wonder why the amount of roots slowed down, or stopped forming, like they once did.
Good luck in your endeavor.

What happened to you happened to me…lol
I started some extra marihuana seeds in plastic egg cartons
Once wth peat. Once wth sand…peat…worked better
It might have it’s place if you are concerned about the root damages that result from usin paper towels

Me personally I do not think a paper towel ever damaged any germinators…except once. Many years ago, I gave up alcohol. A good friend passed away, and I had a couple with close friends at the wake. In my pickled mind, I wanted to start some beans in his honor, so I soaked a plain paper towel, folded it, placed 5 beans into the fold, slide it into a snack sized baggie.
I then passed out, and promptly forgot my germinating beans.
About a week or so later, I spy this snack baggie on my T-5 light frame.
H’mmm what ass hole put this there…and since I’m the only asshole that ever goes in there, I knew the culprit very well.
I open the bag and every bean tailed, and burrowed into the paper towel, and root hairs started to burrow also. One died upon opening the fold. So I cut the paper away, and just planted the bits and all. They lagged a while, but took off.
Have a blast with your grow!!
