There is a dark background for many of the pictures but the disappeared background is mostly achieved via underexposing the scene and lighting the subject w/ a speedlight flash. This can be done in manual mode by adjusting ISO , Aperture, and Shutter speed to achieve desired results. The goal is to not have your light source spill over onto the background. The background would be black even with a solid white wall behind it when shot this way.

Thanks for replying I appreciate the tip, the link and the pics! Keep em coming. I find myself not posting my buds cause my pictures are embarrassing. ( knock off smart phone with a cracked lens ) These are the best i can do.
