Germination - what am I doing wrong?

I’ve had luck with the paper towel method and if I really need to I’ll scuff the seed a touch to get the color off, and use a drop or 2 of peroxide in the paper towel. I then let it ride for a day or 2 . Usually within 24 hours I’ll see a tap root pop out.

These are all basically the same methods repackaged, imho… If the seeds are good, they’re gonna pop …unless you really do something wrong.

Some older seeds might need a little boost, like scuffing, peroxide, etc., but nine 9 of 10 times, a healthy seed is gonna pop a taproot with a little water.

My question now is how effective is something like gibberellic acid when you’re dealing with decade+ old seeds… because there does seem to be a drop off point where they hit a certain age and water + time just doesn’t seem to trigger anything.

I pour the seeds with a good shot of H202 in the seed sprouter. Then i press the button “summer”.
This toy cost 15 bucks but i can’t live without. I like also the possibility to transplant when i decide, they can stay weeks there if necessary.

this looks really similar to the thing I use to grow grass for my cat. Do you just soak the seeds and then keep some water in the bottom and put the soaked seeds on top and they grow into the water?

It’s almost the same thing. I’ve literally discovered this toy while eating in a hipster dinner, vegan sprouts salad and all.

I let swim generally the seeds (if they are commercial releases) in a “germination solution”. Most of the time only one third is correctly matured and calibrated. I prefer to let people figure out whats best for them with some searches, the stuff i’m using if not understood can just kill the seeds. But there is some basics rules that never fail :

  • soaking and germinating in H202 enriched solution : Universal. 3%-5%, around ~5ml/L. Safe, up to you to explore.

  • kelp : Universal and ultra safe to dose. I don’t use for this but it help greatly the anchor of seedlings.

  • fulvic/humic acids : only for those that master this stuff with big plants and know when to don’t use it and why ^^

Once they are soaked, 24hrs to 48hrs, i just place them in the seed sprouter (mostly with just tap water/ H202).
When it’s my seeds, i place them directly without any soaking but they are sorted without any pity like it’s a seed pack of 90’s ^^

I just put some seeds in mine, it was the opportunity to show how it’s running. There is a timer inside, cycles. H202/water/IAA on this one ^^ The water is heated in the tank, and you choose the temps with a button (generally 3).

I want one. It’s simulating rain.

Nice, aeration and hydration at a nice pace of things
Very good solution for those who keep forgetting to moist paper towels or soil.

Amen. The key to getting high germination is starting a high number of seeds. Lol. Especially if they’re old.

Thought about doing a 60-70 plants run, so I put at least 80-90 in the ground for good measure…
Result ?
60 above and let’s give it another day or two to up our odds haha

I love planting like this, gives me a sense if the seeds are bunk or I’m an idiot :sob:

That’s a big run. I just ran some 10 year old f2s, and just start double the amount I need.

Any ideas of the actual name? I’d try it but can’t find anything upon a quick search.

Yeah old batch that’s the right move
Mine is pretty new, putting 25% more should be ideal.

Crazy, right ? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Like others have already mentioned, other than really old seeds, Ive never had any problem getting them to sprout with just folded into a damp paper towel in sandwich bag and put in a warm spot.
By damp, I mean wet it, and give it a squeeze. Damp, not wet. Now I use a heat mat that I set at 78f using an outlet temp control. I put the probe on the heat mat near the seeds and cover them with a towel. But Ive used various types of warm spots from on electronics, to just tossing on the dash of my car, and they all worked fine.

Generally within 3-4 days Ill have roots poking out.

I think it’s like cloning … the most important is the comfort zone. Personnally, each time that i use an heating mat for anything else that working hash … i just screw up everything

I always return to paper towels. If it ain’t broke… In fifty years, never found anything that works as well, or better.

With good seeds, two plates, one paper towel, tap water, in a kitchen cupboard 70F or above, for three days, don’t drown them after first 24 hours, boom, sprouts.

Always seemed to me, every extra moving part of anything is another point of failure. Like hydro vs soil.
