Overgrow is where it all started for me many years ago and I am glad to be here once again. So, with that said lets jump into what I’ve got going on currently.
Last year was the first time I’d cracked a bean in over a decade. After such a lapse in time I’d realized there was a lot of info I was rusty on but still remembered the basics enough to complete a White Widow seed run. I realized I needed to update my game so I lurked on many grow sites refreshing my memory. I am a member of a forum other than OG and I am thankful for the help I’ve received there since jumping back into growing. However since finding out OG was back up I felt the need to become a member once again and share what I’ve been doing lately. So, here we go.
I am currently growing in a 14x32 hoop style greenhouse I constructed earlier this year. Due to some health issues it took me a little longer than expected but by near Memorial day I had some beans cracked and through the soil.
What do I have growing? Blueberry OG Kush, Scooby Snacks #1, and White Widow (backcrossed seed from last years seed grow from seedbank mentioned below). All strains are from a breeder in Oregon. PremierSeedMarket This is all regular seed.
10 BB/K
10 SS
Roughly 50 WW
To save a little time I threw the two week old seedlings into flowering by covering them with black plastic daily 12/12 until they showed me what they were. After culling out the boys and sifting through a ton of WW I settled for roughly 20 plus plants. As the plants did their thing converting back into the veg stage I built a large scrog screen. Initially I built two screens but have since decided to scrap the largest and just manage the smaller one. The scrog wasn’t really planned. I just thought it would be fun since I’d not grown that way in a long time. Usually one uses clones under a screen and not plants from seed. Why? Known uniform growth. With a clone you know the growth characteristics but with a seed you have a vague idea but that’s about it.There is another problem that may occur as well…hermies. Usually seed from a seedbank is stable and there’s not much worry about it but it happens.
Let me mention that this is a economy grow. No fancy soils made just for cannabis. Just simple potting soil from the local feed store called Baccto. Very similar to many on the market just like miracle grow soils. Ideally, and if I could afford it I would have gone with promix hb but I couldn’t find that in my area and most online stores rape the hell outta you with shipping. So, to make this work I needed something cheaper yet good enough to accomplish my goal.
All seed was started in seedling trays. Much like the ones you buy your tomatoes in at the local store. Soon they graduated up to 16oz cups and then ultimately into 7gal growbags. Important steps in developing a strong root system, avoid over watering issues, and rapid growth.
To start out with I used horse crap/grass clippings tea to help the seedlings and young growth until my fox farm nutes came. I’ve never used fox farms but its working fine. Other stuff is the normal ph down, silica, and some cal mag on hand. Ph and tds meter too of course.
Scrog
I’ve grown under a screen using dwc, coco, soil, and peat but never in a greenhouse. Most of my grows were indoors using the hid lamps. This is a new learning curve trying to deal with the environment control of a large space with intense heat and humidity but I’m managing so far. I’ve only had two hermie losses so far and they were both the scooby snack strain so I’m more inclined to think its more genetic than heat related. I can also rule out light leaks since I’m in a horse pasture with no external lights near.
Here’s my smaller screen last week. It has all blueberry kush under it. They all started to flower so I tucked them under and will not train much more during the flower stretch since I have no headroom to worry about. At this point its just managing the thing to maintain a even canopy as it expands.Sometime in the next few days I’ll start cleaning out the undergrowth to direct all that energy above the screen and increase airflow through the canopy.
I usually would only use two plants under a screen this size. More is not always better when it comes to a scrog but I ended up with way more girls than expected and I just can’t compost a perfectly good girl…lol.
Here are what’s left of all the others and the 21 clones that will flower with the others. They won’t get big but they will give me a few oz per plant by the end. More is better…lol.
This WW was the first to launch into flower. I noticed her on 8/1 and by then it was obvious she was days into the cycle. Surprised me…a pleasant surprise…lol.
Here she is just a few days ago. I’m guessing she may be ready by the end of Sept. That will be a nice treat to have as the others are harvested later in Oct.
I’ve noticed some damage from thrips the past few days. I grabbed my magnifying glass and sure enough…lil bastards shitting all over the place. Taking them on with some mild h2o2 diluted spray and safer soap.
Upon finding the bugs and their shit balls it makes me even more excited to try something called bud washing. I stumbled onto the method reading in another forum and questioned many growers who do it to their harvest. Just imagine all the bug shit, dead bugs, pollen, residual foliar spray, dust, dirt, and who knows what else is trapped in buds before we smoke them. Growers I’ve questioned say after using the method they will not even smoke bud not washed. They swear it makes a huge difference in taste and flavor. Not to mention the benefits of not ingesting all those impurities. If you’ve experienced this method please share your thoughts. If your interested in more info…hang around and I’ll let you know what I think.
I’ll update more as I go. Heading into the fun part of the grow now. Thanks for stopping in. It’s always more fun when you can share with others. Every grow I learn something new and with every new friend I learn even more.
