Resort? What’s that? LOL… In Cozumel, I stay on 65th Ave, which is WAY away from the tourist waterfront, as they say there “where the real Cozumelenos live”… In fact, my first trip there, my friend asks me “Are you resort people? If you are you probably wont wanna stay with me”. We stay with him every time. LOL.
Utila, Honduras is also nowhere near resort like. Local dialect is Utilian, but most speak English and get offended if you speak Spanish to them (aka, not the place to learn Spanish).
Travel is the one piece of advice I give younger folks. You learn so much more by experiencing the world… Learning cultures, traditions, and honestly, seeing amazing things.
I would love to one day be fluent in Spanish… At least now I can say I’m honestly working towards it. (and sadly pops passed away 14 years ago, so no conversations with him in Spanish now)

I have been to giant Mexican resorts that cater to North Americans where you don’t need to speak Spanish at all.
I’ve also been to places where if you don’t speak any Spanish you are in serious trouble.
Different types of travel is my point.

I much prefer the latter…
We stayed at a resort one time, the last two nights of our first trip there. You could just tell most of the people at that resort honestly never left the resort… I felt bad for them, go ALL the way there, and ya don’t even get a feel for the culture or country…
They make those resorts so that you dont have to leave as well… Cancun is horrible like that, half mile snaking driveway to go 100 meters from the road… Most resort people are happy never leaving the resort either… SMH…

I agree… I enjoy travelling more when I meet the locals, eat the local food, and enjoy the local culture. “Get off the beaten path” as they say

A lot of people are just looking for a bar and a beach, and that’s fine.
I prefer jumping in the back of a pickup truck to go climb a volcano
