"Hoosier Domme?" F1 Hybrid - Viability Grow Tests

This is my first shot at a grow journal so uh, here goes.

The HD strain is bred from a Black Domina male plant and a female Lemon Sour Ogee, both grown indoors with about a half cup worth of seeds derived from the harvest.

I wanted it to reflect the state where it was made while also incorporating aspects of it’s parents naming. Alternative name would be “Hoo’Sour Domme?”, to reflect both more evenly, and would be open to using if it turns out more sour tasting.

Genetically speaking, Black Domina is a strong indica while Lemon Sour Ogee is a sativa leaning hybrid. Black Domina was from a bag of popcorn buds and the Lemon Sour Ogee was a freebie from Jaws Genetics that took really well.

Previous tests have had above 60% germination rates, though due to the harvesting still including plant material some may have been undeveloped hulls.Poor ventilation concerns culled the first crop due to user failure, problem was corrected for this round.

First 4 tests are in soil, pre soaked with a small amount already popped open, their root visible but not obvious.

Using separate sealed containers half filled with coco coir fiber for substrate which is fully hydrated from the bottom up. I’m poor so I use old pill bottles; they seal well and allow for full viewing of the seed and its early root systems without needing to disturb the plant itself.

What would you say the terpene profile resembles?

3 Day Update - 01

5 sprouts have broken the soil with their embryonic leaves.

One mutant sprout grew without secondary leaves for several days, but has started to develop them, even if a bit malformed and cabbage looking.

2 have entered the true seedling phase, though one is taking time to recover from repotting. The second is doing far better, growing it’s 5th and 6th leaves. Added more coco coir fiber on the top layer to retain moisture and provide for some more support for the stem.

Each container is under a humidity dome until the stem becomes more developed.

Unclear, have not developed any of this strain to maturity yet.

Update Misc: It smells like spearmint, like sweet enough for a tea but that’s only after misting. It’s quite nice. 2 have survived to the young veg stage, sex is not showing for either as of yet. One has circular short leaves and the other has what looks more like a pointy traditional leave set with a darker stem.

I found sexing plants under 10.5 light/13.5 dark gave me sex in 3-5days with majority showing by day 3.

Spearmint is super interesting! Sounds amazing. I was smelling some spruce yesterday as I was walking and boy would I love to find a plant with a sweet spruce smell. Maybe a little funk on the underside to break the sweet.

Would it be best to swap it to that schedule? It’s my first strain so I’ve had it on 8 hours dark, 16 light.

The smell is amazing, hoping it will retain that it goes onwards since it’s pretty cozy. Spruce would give me Christmas Kush vibes and now I kind of want some too.

So if you’re looking to get sex on a plant that could be male or female the easiest way is to put them in a flowering light cycle. Less than 13.2 hours of light. Most home growers use 12/12, but pure sativas wont always flip and will need 11/13.
10.5/13.5 is something I picked up from a breeder and have used to great success.
Once you get sex you can then flip your lights back to 18/6 to continue vegging.

If you leave at 18/6 you will eventually see male or female parts but this will take a good amount of time or stress to see.
For example, you can keep plants in small containers to stress them and in turn they will start the flower process. I do this for my outdoor plants.

If you know your plants are female than you can stay on 18/6 and change your lights when you’re ready to flower them.
If they are auto flowers, light won’t do anything to help show sex and they will flip when they flip. Up to genetics on that.

Hope this helps and ask any questions you may have. I will answer to the best of my knowledge and/or guide you to some reading to help you further.

Thank you so much for the detailed response, it helped me decide what to do.

I swapped it to the 10.5L/13.5D as they’re in 2.5 liter containers of substrate atm until the stems get a bit steadier. (Small grow tent). Decided that if I get any males, I will try and collect some pollen before culling for future projects.

Ultimately if I can make a cultivar with the spearmint present I’d like to make an F2, but that feels a little bit like jumping the gun as it’s so young.

So if your plants are still young, only a few nodes with leaves, they will take time under that light sch as well as they don’t have the proper hormones for bloom yet. Some growers will put their plants directly under a bloom light sch if they are looking through a bunch or have certain restrictions. Again, it will take a little bit to make the proper hormones.

How many days has it been since they have been above dirt? Better yet, do you have any photos of them?

They’ve been above soil about a week or so, maybe 10 days at most. As for photos, I need to take some but my phone is charging. I only have two plants. Once my phone is at 100 I can send photos in DM if that’s alright.

They’re about 5-6 inches tall currently with 3 nodes on the smaller circular leaves and at least 4 nodes on the larger one.

They’re still a little young. I’d give them another week under 18/6 and then flip to 10.5/13.5 to get sex.
This should make their transition back to veg smoother since they should be caught up on necessary hormones. Assuming you get what you’re looking for.

You can leave 10.5/13.5 if you’d like but it may take 10+ days to show sex.
If there’s a female in there and you then switch lights back to 18/6 it will take longer for her to get back into veg mode. Essentially just wasting valuable grow time.

Whoa, keep the plants in the 16/8 veg schedule.
Do you not have a 2nd tent?
I have 2 tents, one is 18/6, the other is 12/12.
When my plants get big enough to top, I take the top, stick it in a cup of water with a light dose of veg nutrients, and set it in the flower tent. The cutting in the cup of water will show sex in about 10 days.
No need to flip the whole plant back and forth, and go through reveg.
Just sayin’.
