Is it too LATE to train/top?..

Would it be pointless to top some of these?
They’re NOW 9 weeks 6 days old, in their 4th and 5th weeks of Veg…

My problems at the moment are space and even light distribution…would anyone recommend either LST, HST, TOPPING, DEFOLIATING, or SCROG? Also, for my next grow, should I start training immediately after entering the Vegetative stage?..

I plan to move half outside and keep half in my closet/tent, so I’ll probably move the tallest outside and keep the smallest where they are. All help/suggestions are appreciated!..:raised_hands:t5:

Its not too late - but…Topping is usually done to increase the number of branchings so you have more colas - not to shorten the plants height. Same with LST and HST (topping). They work much better when you start early though. It depends on how soon you want to switch to flower. It can take weeks to see any results and slows the plant growth in the case of any HST.

You could do scrog on the shorter plants maybe, but the whole purpose of scrog is to help fill up a tent - not to make more room.

if you need to keep them out of the lights, I guess you could top them, but a better way might be to do some “super cropping”. You can google that for more details, but basically it involves bending the stem over 90 degrees without breaking it. That forces the plant to grow sideways. Keep in mind that will also cause extra new side stems, and the stem will usually turn right back up in short order unless you keep it tied down sideways.

What exactly is it you need to do?

I dont think you need to defoliate yet. Wait till it gets more crowded.

I start training - lst, and FIMing - when they are a max 6" tall. I use a scrog screen, and train the plants to grow UNDER the screen until its about 75-80% full, then switch to flower. I do that so I can fill a tent with fewer plants and the max number of colas.

This is a single plant in a small tent using a scrog screen to fill it up.

Not my best use of a scrog screen, but gives you the idea. I should have started sooner when the plant was smaller.

Ah, Brother - That’s 10 out of 10!!
Excellent work. :call_me_hand: :sunglasses: :+1:

Sorry, didnt see this. Where do you live? Unless these are autos, its really late to be moving plants out doors unless you are south of the equator? Even for autos, its gonna be getting cold soon outdors.

Show a pic of the entire grow tent so we can see how crowded it is. You might be just fine.

Also - this is just my opinion. If you hang around long enough, you will soon realize that there are 10 different “best” answers for every question you have!. Im sure others will be tossing their cookies into the fire soon

Just FYI. This is starting up in a couple weeks. Good way to practice on a small scale. 16oz Cup Manifold Contest

Well, if it were possible, I’d like to keep them all indoor. If I’d learned about training earlier, I’d have kept them all short and in the tent the entire time. But, it’s getting more and more difficult to observe, maintain, and water them all in there…i have a 7’ greenhouse half setup in a very sunny spot outside though(i live in central cali btw) so i was hoping I could put them out there before it gets too cold and see how big I could get them lol

Well, if it gets to where you cant maintain them, then you have to do something or risk loosing them all.

I grew up in Lodi, and had relatives we visited all the time in Sacramento, Davis, Stockton, Fresno, Turlock, Merced, Tracy and Bakersfield, and some in the San Francisco area and Livermore. We were a scattered Calif tribe!

Anyway, if you have to use the green, it house might work out - if the skies ever clear up from smoke!

If space is a premium id flip to 12/12 now, send a pic of the whole grow so we can get a better idea how overcrowded it is.

Topping can technically be done at any time up till the last half or third of flowering and all plants will have slight different reactions.

From what i can see the space isnt too full (plants ontop of one another)

You’re fine for space in my opinion mate, id give it a bit more veg time and do some low stress training then flip once you fill some of that remaining space. They will grow upwards (tie em down if one gets too high above the others) but you got the height to handle it. A general rule of thumb is double or tripple the height once you flip unless you have sativas.

If you look at larrys first pic his is bordering on 80% filled (scrog net helps loads if you can still water) id aim for around there.

You can always remove a plant if it gets too crowded. How i tell if mine is too crowded is i look at the leafs touching one another and if moisture remains then its too dense.

I just noticed that the pic doesn’t have ALL the plants in there🙄 I take them out and water them in my room, right outside the tent, under this 3 headed clip on LED that’s 75w… I will probably have to start watering them inside the tent soon though, with them getting bigger.

Here’s another pic with ALL the girls inside:

I topped a few of the smaller ones, supercropped 2 of the big ones, did LST with 2 others, and one I left alone. Lol, I’ll see what my outcomes are.

I let my plants get too tall as well. I’m about to chop the main stem down a few nodes, to where the side branches form a more or less even canopy. I’m trying to chop 6-8” of height and let the lower branches get thicker before flipping them. I’ve already wasted too much time to start a true manifold or mainline with mine, but that’s the same drastic pruning that helps maintain a height and make a more even canopy.

Fashoo… I forgot to mention that I also semi-defoliated the bottom levels, pulling off the fan leaves that weren’t growing anymore.

Glad to hear I’m not the only person to do it this late in the stage. Thanks✊🏾

Yea, I’m On 8th or 9th week too and already half the height of my tent, so I need to have it finish not too much taller than they are now.

Yeah when mine got big I was watering like that.
Personally I still think you are fine to flip to 12/12 in a week or two. You still got the height to handle them, nice big fan and if I’m seeing correctly a dehuey? Controlling their environment is key after all. This sounds like your first grow and you will learn a huge amount by just paying attention, at the end of it you will either be going I should have waited longer or I shouldn’t have waited longer so the next round you’ll have formulated your own opinion which is all this is, you can get away with a lot. Personally I’m doing a SOG with autos and they each get about 4 inches of room this round… By week 3 they are already getting into each others personal space hehehehe. (I’m not advising do what I do just an example. The denser it is the more likely you will get mould where the buds touch of you don’t keep up a good airflow)

Others you will see their plants not touch the sides at all and that’s personal preference again

I think you should flip them just now - you’ll be surprised at how much they will fill in and stretch. Are they all in the pots you’re gonna flower them in ? If so then flip them soon bro .( jmo.)
Good luck with the flowering.!
Any questions, just ask and you’ll find that lots of members here will help you.!!

What would i do with the smaller ones though? Only 6 outta 8 are really thriving…I do have a second smaller tent, i guess?..

I just noticed, your fabric bags are only 1/2-2/3 full. It’s likely too late now, but fill them all the way next time, and plant directly in or use bags for your final transplant.
