Flip Right After Topping

So I’m going to run out of headroom.

I might cut them shorter.
I might tie them down.

Has anybody flipped to 12/12 immediately after topping? What happens?

Thanks!

IMHO not much happens. The usual couple of day pause . I don’t see why it would be a bad thing , unless someone for whatever reason needs that main cola. Depending on stretch you may still end up needing to tie them down .

Good luck

What are you growing? Tell us Moar

Thanks.

I’m likely going to tie them down anyway but I’m checking my options out.

I’m using new lights/new methods so I’m in uncharted territory.

I don’t have good luck with single colas. Bad things happen to them.

O shit I am growing 3 Silver Mountain F2’s I got in a trade with a Og’er! They are lil guys now. That is good to know they are called “Mountain” for a reason. I grow tons of Sk18 crosses and TNF gear yea they are all good for indoors.

They are a half a haze so it might be a challenge and I just might have the haze pheno.

Light manufacturer says 14” and I’m already at 12” so I need to make a move

It just slows 'em down a bit. No worries, it’s better than having them sprawl all over.

Like @anon60559124 said, bit of a pause then they will stretch, more so the lowers which you just stimulated. Effect will be a bushier shorter plant ime. Sounds like a reasonable move given your concerns.

I’m also considered hacking them back a couple of nodes, letting the multiple branches grow a bit, tie them down, let them grow a bit more, then flip.

It just feels wrong to cut them so hard.

There is a technique for topping I can’t think of the name atm . But you kinda peel back the grow tip and only pinch or cut the the actual grow tip inside. It doesn’t seem to stale them nearly as much as just hacking at the top node.
I would probably do what you just spelled out.

Fuck I Missed? FIMing?

I always do a lazy top so if it turns into a FIM I’m just as happy.

I have a shelf at the bottom of the cabinet that I can remove for extra headroom but I’m going to need it for stretch and I don’t want to use it yet.

I honestly am drawing a blank. Someone showed it to me many years ago and it works great.

I know what that’s like all too well. I’ve found creating the lateral bend by twist tying the top to its own branch as far as it will bend conserves on the head room and slows the vertical growth down, and exposes the lower shoots to more direct light. Those become golfball to baseball size nuggets. I believe it yields more per site than a normal vertical cola.

Depends on morphology.

With a very narrowleaf stretchy “sativa”, nothing lol. It just continues on as if nothing happened. Branches explode from everywhere anyway.

A super squat columnar broadleaf plant might cost yield since topping sort of stunts their growth for a week or so.

Hard to know what any particular seed plant will do since most things are between the extremes.

Alright. I guess the move is to hack them back, let them branch a bit, tie them down, let them grow a bit more, then flip.

I’m going to make this decision tomorrow - I’ve got too many thoughts flying right now.

A day or 2 pause might occur but it won’t hurt anything. You may also consider some super cropping to manage your height. Super easy and very effective.

I’ve done this a couple times. Not much really other than a slight delay usually. But I like to top back to the node below the height I want them at, let the new nodes grow out a little to the desired height, then flip. Just don’t top more than a week into bloom, you’ll have not only smaller yield once buds start to form.

Also, supercrop right till the end of stretch if you’re really pressed for height.

Id say it depends lol. My last run I vegged for a long time in hydro I don’t think anything i did made the plants skip a beat stress wise. They recovered near instantly

With the triangle kush i topped a couple smaller plants and threw them right into flower and noticed slower growth for sure.
