Hi everyone.
I just bought a pack of NL #5 IBLseeds from Todd McCormick. I am going to do the sex testing on them to determine which ones are male. My question is, could I flip the males to flower super early in a separate tent? For example , two weeks in and collect pollen off them before I flip my females to flower? Is it stupid to chuck the pollen from males of one pack onto select branches from the same ibl in order to make seeds for myself? Just starting my journey with breeding ( pollen chucking at this point).
Thanks so much and I really appreciate any help.
Much love
If you’re looking to make a selection and increase seeds of that selection, it isn’t stupid at all. You could run the males on 12/12 to speed it up but growing them out would give you a better idea of what the male MAY bring to the table. I think it would be best to still select a best male and a best female. An IBL is just an inbred line and you can keep breeding it pure but it is ready to cross. The only question is what do you want to do?
it would be cooler if you selected the plants first. imo, it would even cooler if you selected two females that reversed one. then you would know what to exect from both sides.
I’d second this
You can do a selection or first do an open pollination, have a shit ton of seeds and then look through those. I personally like that option.
Thanks so much.
I would definitely pick the best male and put it on one branch from each female. The goal is just to have more seeds at this point. I’d then finish the females off and do my seed selection from there. I’ve heard that females tend to dominate in terms of passing on traits to the progeny with IBL’s but maybe I’m wrong. At least I’d have seeds from each female and would do the selection after the fact. . I’ve been struggling a bit with cloning so would love to just have more seeds. Also want to minimize the risk of seeding my entire tent, hence why I’m planning the timing like this.
Thanks. If I had more space I’d love to.
I just don’t want to seed my entire tent.
I’d like to be able to smoke the flower too
It sounds like you actually have a plan in mind already and if that’s true then yes you should push forward as planned and pollinate as planned! I know if I had NL 5 IBL’s I’d want to do the same.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. I just figured rather than wasting the pollen and also potentially screwing up the reversal ( I’ve never done it before), and also not seeding my whole grow, that this made sense. I realize selfing would give me feminized genetic clones of the mom but I’m hedging that I can do/practice doing a reversal on something I like from the progeny of that ‘cross’
No it won’t. You have more chances to have a plant real close to the mother because you narrowed so much the genepool with the selfing. Won’t be clones though.
Consider also that by selfing you’d lock yourself in fem only, while by using males you can continue the line in reg and fem as you wish later on.
But that’s not your plan
There are other way to do what you want:
You can flower males and females together, cut branches of the male(s) you choose just before they start dropping pollen and toss the rest. Put the branches in a glass of water near a window (and under something to prevent pollen to fly). They’ll go on dropping pollen you will be able to collect. Put a sheet of parchment paper under the glass to collect the pollen. Usually males bloom before females, you have time to collect the pollen before the females are ready to get seeded.
There’s also the males-in-a-bag method documented here:
By using one of this technique you can flower everything at once, so faster partially seeded sensi harvest if you’re careful enough.
I’m saving this method, thanks for the knowledge.
Wow. Thanks so much for all this great information. I really appreciate it so much. This is so helpful!
I sometimes do a variation of this which is to lean the whole plant sideways over newspaper.
Painting pollen is easy. Just use a qtip. But not generic ones, they unravel, brand name only.
Best of luck.
