I have worms in soil. Soil in pots and sips. Maybe you’re referring to small pots vs. beds? Not sure if worms in pots is a problem. At what point 15g 5g 1g? When does a pot become a bed?
My only concern when building living soil is making sure I don’t have too much potassium. Most compost comes super loaded on K unless it’s very mature so just control your potassium with the ratio of compost in your mix, and if you have access to recent test results on the compost you’re using, it’s invaluable info.
I add another amendment that carries a lot of nitrogen so the plant can create new cells to accommodate this rush of K and Mag so it doesnt get toxicity.
I’ve been using both langbeinite and potassium sulfate. I’ve learned only use the langbeinite if you know you need more Mg otherwise it can lockout the K you’re trying to add.
For the worms, they can come from good castings like @ReikoX said. Or you can order them if you want from somewhere like Uncle Jim’s.
Hey thanks for the info! I mixed this living soil that i was referring to and i think i added something insanely small like 3 tbsp of potassium sulfate per 4 cuft.
The soil worked out but it did not have enough nutrients and i actually fed the plant with bottles its entire life and i did not get any nute burn but i did get the best buds in my tent out of that soil fed with nutes. Not sure if its the pheno, the dirt, or both.
Also i added a lot of peat to lower soil ph (before cooking) to 6.5 which made top watering a no go so the plant was fed most of its life from the bottom.
Those look awesome. Ya, you could’ve used more than 3 TBLS for 4 cu ft. You can also add it to water. I add it to my top dressing mixes. I’ve even just top dressed with it but it’s probably best mixed into mixes or diluted in water.
K’s one of the most easily leached nutrients since it only has one + charge. Ca and Mg both have 2 + and will hold onto the soil particles tighter. That’s partly why the Mg in the langbeinite can cause issues and lockout the K if you use too much.
Organics is tough. I still don’t have it all figured out but am slowly getting better. I don’t fully understand all the chemistry shit but I did some reading on ion exchange and sulfates which helped me understand some shit better.
My soil got high in Ca so adding sulfates such as langbeinite and potassium sulfate helped. The sulfates can attach to the Ca and make it able to be flushed out. And in exchange for the Ca, Mg and K can take it’s place. Otherwise it wants to stay attached to the soil particles which has a - charge.
