No-Till & Organics Q&A's

I was not aware of that. That usually means it also takes up pesticides and heavy metals. So, it is not necessarily a good thing. However, I will continue to use alfalfa meal from organic sources and hope for the best.

Cannabis is also a bioaccumulator and it has been grown on sites contaminated with heavy metals in order to clean the soil, which I think is pretty cool.

It removes radiation from the ground as well.

I know they also use fungi to cleanup soils.

I truly believe my plants health has increased many times over with the use of biolive! The refractometer Iv been using is a good indicator of it , plants pushed 15 points on the Brix scale!

Wow. I’m glad I talked you into it, and you started before I did.

Has anyone made horsetail tea with Equisetum hyemale? I don’t have any of the fern variety around me but plenty of wild scouring rush, the long stalks that grow spores on the top.

Haven’t been able to find much info on this, the little I did read mentioned only to avoid harvesting while they were throwing spores. Also that August was best time to harvest but I haven’t been able to observe these local plants for a full year yet.

Wondering if something would need to be added to break down the more woody stalks compared to the ferns.

I have noted horsetail growing on shoulder of local road. If I harvest any plants I would use LABS plus.clean water to break it down

Hi everybody,

I’m almost done setting up my grow room, (4 x 4 tent Mars hydro FC 4800).
I got a few questions please:

  1. Pot size:

should I get one big bed and what size fits in the tent, considering I might need extra things inside like dehumidifier or other things? What height 1 or 2 feet? I wads thinking something like this:

Or:

Or a couple of smaller pots ( a few 25 or 20 gallons)

  1. Soil mix: I’ll follow ReikoX’s simplified just water recipe of Coots. I won’t get every single additive lol. I have a few questions though please:

Do you have to grind the malted barley?
Do you use perlite and/ or rice hulls?
Do you use neem for pests?
Do you need bio char?
What’s the best cover crop?

Ok thanks a lot

I would go with 10 or 20 gal smart pots they are big enough for no till, and small enough to move around easily. If you are going to do any type of training or trimming you need to get close to the plants. Or if you get any bugs your not going to be able to look closely at them. You won’t be able to get in a 4x4 with a huge pot or pull it out to work on them.

Perfect you can’t go wrong.

Do you have to grind the malted barley? Yes put it in a blender and turn it into a powder.

Do you use perlite and/ or rice hulls? Perlite for soil areation, rice hulls in the top of your soil instead of a cover crop or mixed in but it will break down, so perlite or lava rock is better for aeraton.

Do you use neem for pests? Neem oil for pests neem cake for a soil NPK additive.

Do you need bio char? If you can get it it’s quite beneficial, if not don’t worry but any charcoal you got from camp fires can be added for the carbon, or mixed with a fish emulsion to make your own. It’s stinky though.

What’s the best cover crop?
Anything that takes nitrogen out of the air and fixes it in the soil. Clover is good but thrips and mites like it, and can hide in it. Alfalfa works to well, very high in N. What the cover crop does is lessen water evaporation and add nitrogen to your soil, and create a root web that the cannabis will exchange nutrients with, some types of flowers repel bugs. So really so long as your cover crop accomplishes those things it’s good.

Throw in a bunch of seeds, water a little, do a dance and walk away.

Kitchenscraps, tree leaves, dandelion, thistle, nettle, grass, etc

Sow vetch for nitrogen, chop & drop when it starts to flower.
It’s all I ever use anymore.

My growbag sits in a bigger container of the same height, slows down evaporation since there’s no draft inside and maybe once every week or two weeks I pour in some water which then gets soaked up from the bottom. Topwatering only rarely and very little, this way I don’t have any gnats, apart from the odd one or two occasionally.
