I suggest they put Elon Musk on the case to manufacture it
He said design is the easy part, but manufacturing it, and making machines that make the machines to make it affordable requires 100 times more effort.
They shine hundreds of lasers onto a few atoms and they fuse together, creating excess energy, in the same way stars do. They are able to create nano stars now.
My guess is that they’ll create nano-reactors and combine them in arrays to increase power.
We’ll be able to power our cars with our smartphones.
"And there is another point: the positive energy gain reported ignores the 500MJ of energy that was put into the lasers themselves.
However, Chittenden stressed the NIF was designed for a scientific demonstration, not as a power plant. “The efficiency of converting electrical energy to laser energy was not a factor in its design,” he said.
“Anyone working in fusion would be quick to point out that there is still a long way to go from demonstrating energy gain to getting to wall-plug efficiency where the energy coming from a fusion reactor exceeds its electrical energy input required to run the reactor,” he added."
essentially just laser energy vs extracted heat, what i didn’t see is also the energy cost of producing the fuel source, also to note and i understand baby steps here were talking about 0.1kwh “0.4MJ” of energy progress is still progress
yeah but the Feds will get involved and regulate and tax the shit out of it until only peeeps with $$$ will be able to afford anything like that just as they do for everything else …quote the beatles…IM THE TAX MAN…SO SAD
Would be nice to see, but I expect humanity will still be burning dead proto-birds to stay warm long after any of us are still alive… not like people starve because there’s not enough food. They starve because the food can’t get to where people need it, because other people get in the way.
I think this is a great break through. Ok the research got started by Fermi, late 50’s, early 60’s.
Then all these later, we get a bump, and in another 40-50 years maybe, it will work.
We know nuclear power is the only carbon free energy. The safest ever made.
Thorium is by FAR the better placed research value, hell we proved molten salt reactors were safe since the 60’s.
They just received hysterical bad press, all from bad management.
Let go green and, TURN THE NUKES BACK ON!
Well energy generation was more skipped over for “fuel enrichment” in the 40-70’s for obvious reasons “big ba da boom”, cause why would anyone want plentiful energy.
And @olschool its the national “US” ignition labratory, i believe its funded by the us government to a degree but i really dont know on that.
With Fusion, AI & Robots we could have a literal Utopia where no one has to work. The AI robot systems could farm & build.
In 30 years humans could be left alone, free to enjoy the earth, create art, do drugs, explore consciousness, pursue pleasure (giant stadium sized orgies) & just care for each other/animals.
OR…
We can have war, build drone armies, continue destroying the earth/each-other for the love of POWER.
Just incase future society wants to know my choice… I choose the utopia & stadium sized orgies
yeah i probably could be more positive if there was a more positive outcome for anything that could benefit humankind that the govt hasnt got their fingers into
space travel. maybe even time travel but thats enough juice to power our grow lights next to nothing, hope they use it for good use and not wars and other things humans do with power.
I’ve said it for years. The secret to limitless energy is making toddlers-teens wear jump-suits and other articles of clothing that convert their kinetic motion and friction into energy store in thin cells within the suit.
This gets wireless transferred into the city wide grid which then is connected to any national grid.
This and make for methane & wind power underwear for those with flatulence with the same grid connections to transfer the power.
