I have been using schedule 80 unions, fittings, and piping to minimize light, ie possibility of algae growth.
Am I spending the extra money foolishly? Are standard white schedule 40 pipe and fittings anything I should be concerned over?

I’ve been using sch40 for over 10 years without giving it a second thought…
Algae and slime is most likely to come from a light leak in the reservoir lid or a netpot that’s not filled completely or pieces of leaves falling in the water.
You can always put pool noodles/pipe insulation tubes on your pipes for extra protection and that can help with water temps too
Paint it black to block light then paint it white to cut down on heat. Yeah , I said screw that too.
