TopShelfs trees (Part 3)

The line I always liked is “the heat is for the pipes it’s not for you.”

We have a place on the way into the whiteshell that sells for $5 a bag. Big bag! So it’s nice for us coming out from the city…kids have to deal with being crammed the last 15 mins…lol…but they can hack it.

We’ve got a sawmill close to us that sells the rough stuff for firewood. A full size pick-up truck bed used to run 15 bucks a few years ago. I haven’t checked to see what it is lately. I have over 5 acres of hardwood on my property and if I was younger I’d be splitting some and selling it at 300 bucks a cord.

Now that’s reasonable, it’s the 10-15$ bags with 3-4 “logs” more resembling kindling or as you said one log just split into several pieces …. And you see people grabbing the steady at places :man_facepalming:t2:

Oh hell yes brother! Damn I never even thought about all that land you’ve got! WoW that’s awesome! Definitely a great commodity/resource to have at your disposal! I should come out! I smell a business opportunity :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I’ve put offers up over the years for free firewood if they cut them. I used to have a 2 acre field with horse stables but I didn’t have a tractor to keep up with it and the whole area is woods and blackberry bushes now. Saved me from buying my daughter a horse at least lol.

An old family friend had some land with a stream running through it. How realistic is it to attempt a small hydro-power station?

Probably pretty realistic, especially with the banks etc. and pre built stuff you can buy nowadays, I knew guys that did it for power at their plots back in the day. Just old school simple stuff but I’m sure it could be done awesomely and relatively cheap nowadays.

A water wheel and a kit are available from several survival supply places. I have two creeks and a waterfall that would be great for it but I never pursued it. There are kits and designs available for building your own as well.

I used to burn nothing but slab wood from the sawmill but I sold the mill to my Nephew. “I’ll keep you in slabs for firewood” he said. Then he moved almost 100 miles from me. I haven’t seen a stick from him.
My brother felt bad so we are going in on a newish mill to use around the place. Lumber is crazy expensive and I have a small barn to build. We had a nice one but a battery charger caught fire and burned it down a few years back.

That stinks about your nephew, my son knows he’d have a new knot on his head if he did that to anyone, but family is even worse. Hope the new mill cranks out straight boards and extra firewood for ya.
