Twenty20 Bad Girl Octopots - CrookedTooth's First Grow Diary

BG #1 got topped today… going to start training for a manifold/mainline.
Will probably do BG #2 in another 1-2 days.

Looking good. I ran a bad girl or two a while back and boy they didn’t disappoint. Good producers some color tons of frost a wonderful smell and taste. Potency was also very good. You’re gonna pleased in the end.

Check out autopotamus on IG. He’s a guest on a few YouTube grow channels and he uses the octopot system. Dude gets over an elbow per plant indoors with autos. He will be doing classes for that company on how to get maximum results in the near future.

Here’s some pics from today.

Roots have reached the Octopot reservoirs and seem to be developing quickly there.
I increased the light to level 4 today (600 PPFD).

I don’t like the look of the fan leaves on BG#2 below. Any recommendations? I think it could be a result of my Week 1 veg nutrients being too strong (950 ppm) and too high pH (6.2). I’ve since adjusted to 550ppm and pH 5.8, and the new growth is looking better.

Here you can see the start of the manifold. I’ve been adjusting the LST every morning to try to keep the 2 main shoots horizontal and growing in opposite directions.

And finally, here is BG#3 in a separate tent with a low watt veg LED (300PPFD). I’m not really sure what to do with this one.

Update on the Bad Girls

Topped BG#1 today for the second time… at both growth shoots.
The 4 main shoots will each get 1 more topping in a week or so for an 8 cola mainline.

BG#2 will only get 1 more topping in a couple days and be trained for a manifold instead of mainline… I’m hoping this lets her catch up to her sister. Plus it will give me a chance to observe the differences between mainlines and manifolds.

They’re still on pH5.8/600ppm feed and 400 PPFD light. I haven’t spotted any discoloration or burnt tips on any of the new growth.

Bad Girl #1 has 4 shoots growing now. They will all get topped again at their first nodes, which will complete the mainline toppings and result in 8 growth tips.

Bad Girl #2 just got topped for the second and last time for her manifold training. She already has 8 growth tips.

And here’s Bad Girl #3. She’s growing slowly and has tighter internodal spacing. I haven’t done any training or defoliation. I still don’t know what to do with this plant.

Excellent thread… Very well documented. The time lapse is awesome !!! Well Done Cheers !!!

I did some more manifold training and pretty aggressive defoliation on Bad Girl #2 today.

So far, I’m liking the manifold better than the mainline. It’s faster and easier to structure nicely. I’ve read that a disadvantage of the manifold is that the inner colas will be less developed than the outer since they are downstem and receive auxins which slows their growth (apical dominance). I’m curious if this will be noticeable.

With the mainline, I’m expecting 8 equal colas, unaffected by auxins or apical dominance. But it takes longer, and more difficult training. Bad Girl #1 still needs a couple more days until I’ll be able to top her for the last time. I did some minor defoliation today to maximize the light on the growth tips.

Also did a water change and measured the light today:
pH 5.8
620 ppm
550 PPFD at 15"

So the training is done for the most part. I had a little accident with Bad Girl #1 and lost one of the growth tips, but I think they are both looking good.

Am I ready to flip? I was going to do 1 more feed with veg nutes and probably flip within the next week, but I’d like to hear what others think.

Bad Girl #1, was trained for mainline, but it currently only has 6 main colas (because I broke the other one :frowning:) I found mainline training to be a lot more difficult than manifold, and will probably avoid it on future grows.

Bad Girl #2, was trained for manifold. You can see it is much more symmetrical, flat, and filled out than BG#1.

What do you think? Ready to flip the lights to flower?

@CrookedTooth I really like your time lapse vids. I’m sure it was difficult to get that all going. But It is so cool !!! They look great if you don’t flip them soon, they’ll be absolute monsters lol. Cheers !!!

Flipped to flower yesterday.

Moved lights to 22" and increased to level 6 (740 PPFD)
Added supplemental U/V bars full time @ 100%
Athena Blended Week 1 Flower feed @ pH5.8, 950ppm
Adjusted VPD to 1.0 kPa

I’m disappointed with Bad Girl #1 because I got a little too aggressive during the mainline training… completely snapped off 1 of the growth tips and severely injured another. Right now she has 4 healthy main colas and a bunch of supplemental smaller ones that I will let continue to grow. The main stem is HUGE.

Bad Girl #2 is looking very good. There were no mishaps during the manifold training and the result is a very low and flat canopy with 8 main colas. I’ve been pinching off any supplemental growth tips I find, and removing fan leaves that block light for the main colas. I’m thinking about topping all 8 colas 1 more time, but not sure if I should… need to do more research!

@supersecretjim The modified airpots are very easy to spin around in the octopot bases.

Very Cool! Nicely done :100:

Do you have ACTUAL Air Pots, or one of the many quality versions out there?
Care to share a link? There’s confusion regarding sizing as well.

I’d like to order one or two and give a whirl for possibly next grow.

Your grow is looking awesome!

No plans tonight after the Mike Tyson disappointment yesterday… so I decided to do a little gardening.

I decided the autofill reservoir system isn’t really necessary in my setup. If I was growing in 4+ Octopots, then I would use it… but with only 2 plants it’s easy to keep up with individual watering. By removing the reservoir and the associated plumbing I was able to move the plants to a better position in the tent.

I mixed up 8 gal of Week 2 flower Athena Blended line nutrients, and filled the individual Octopot reservoirs.
pH 5.8
990 ppm

I’m feeling better about Bad Girl #1 after the mainline training failure. She’s growing quickly and I’ve been able to keep the canopy low. I’m not going to be very strict with training on this one, and will just let the stronger looking shoots grow.

I’m very happy with Bad Girl #2. She has 8 evenly spaced main colas all at the same height… with a low flat canopy. I’ve been pinching off any new shoots and will only let the 8 mains continue to grow.
