Twenty20 Bad Girl Octopots - CrookedTooth's First Grow Diary

Hi all,
I’m a new grower with just one DWC hydro grow under my belt.

For my second grow, I’ve selected Twenty20’s Bad Girl (fem photo) from Great Lakes Genetics.

My goal is to document my progress and get advice if any problems/questions arise. I was inspired by @supersecretjim grow logs, and will be attempting many of the same things he has been doing.
I plan to grow 2 plants in Octopots (with auto-feed reservoir) in my 4x4 tent. I modified a couple 7.5 gallon air pots so that they will fit in the Octopots (thanks to Mr420 on youtube for the excellent video tutorial).

Light: ACI Ionframe Evo6 + ACI Ionbeam targeted spectrum UV bars (x2)
Medium: ProMix HP w/Mycorrhizae
Nutrients: Athena Blended line w/RO water

Jane app log

I’ve just placed 2 seeds sandwiched between a moist paper towel in a ziploc bag and stuck it in a kitchen drawer. Hopefully in a few days, they will have sprouted and I’ll plant them directly into the Octopots.

Wish me luck!!!

Awesome choice here @CrookedTooth

I’m very excited to see what happens throughout this grow. Currently running one Twenty20 strain myself (Hot Mess fem, a Trainwreck cross).

Best of luck for this grow :v:

Looks great @CrookedTooth , and thanks!
Just dont blame me when the world blows up

Quick question… are the Air-Pots locked into the Octo-base, or can they be rotated freely within the base once inserted? This is very important to me for ease of trimming, etc.

I definitely want to try Air-Pots, but the Rain Science bags Im using now are a huge improvement from the Octosleeves.

I’ll be watching, for sure. Love your adventurous spirit!

Octopots are awesome. So easy. Since youre going Athena, just do the schedule for the most part. Should be successful grow. Two Octos in a 4x4 will fill things up nicely. Two in my 2x4 was cramped, for sure. But can be done.

Any questions, feel free to ask!

I’ll be here to help and support you as well @CrookedTooth. There is an incredible wealth of knowledge and information here for you from so many different people. Please ask questions if you have any, we are all here to help. Good luck!!

It is difficult, but not impossible to rotate the air pots once they’ve been clicked into the octopot bases. Some silicone lubricant might make this easier.

Thanks for getting back on that one.
Gonna take that as “Cannot be freely rotated”

I may still order one of them for a single-plant Octo-grow and see for myself how compatible it may or may not be with my style and needs.

My OCD mind loves how they stand straight up. No leaning towers in your grow @CrookedTooth :100:

Could do a head 2 head 2x4 grow with Rain Science Bags vs Air-pot, but I doubt much difference, Both are superior to cloth bags, I’m sure.

Checked on the seeds tonight… they’ve both sprouted after 48h.
Into the Octopots first thing in the morning!

Added extra perlite to the ProMix HP + Mycorrhizae and moistened with 380ppm nutrient water (pH 5.8).

Planted the seeds (very shallow) and top watered with Clonex water. Placed into the tent and put the octo-domes on.
Filled the reservoirs halfway (380ppm, pH 5.8).
Set the Evo6 light to level 4 (PPFD = 310), 18/6 schedule.
Currently 78F and 83%RH (0.54kPa) under the domes.

Waiting on a couple items so I can connect the auto-feed system.

One of the seeds has sprouted

But the other one looked like the taproot was sticking through the surface instead of the stem. I think when I top watered, the seed might have spun around so the root was pointing up?? Anyway, I turned the taproot back down and reburied the seed… and I also planted a fresh seed right next to it and put a little RO water over them to keep them moist. Hopefully one of the two will turn into a nice sprout.

May your nuggs be frosty and abundant!!! Looking forward to watching this.

I connected all the plumbing for the Octopot auto-feed system, but probably won’t start using it for a couple weeks.

Still waiting for a seed to pop on the second plant.

The seed that I turned around and reburied sprouted overnight! There’s still a second seed that will probably sprout in the next couple days which I’ll just eliminate.

It’s almost caught up in size to the first sprout already… which is looking a little ‘leggy’.

I lowered the light to 18" and reduced it to level 3… PPFD is at 390.

I also turned on the HVAC (triggered at 75 degrees) and the humidifier (set to VPD 0.6) because the VPD in the octodomes has been reading around 0.9

QUESTION: When should I remove the octodomes? It seems like there are a lot of differing opinions on this.
Edit: I removed the domes.

Here’s the seedlings today.

Bad Girl #2 is leaned over… the stem is almost horizontal. Should I rotate the air-pot 180 degrees? Increase the light?

I guess I won’t see much growth until the roots hit the reservoir.

Lights are at 18" - 390ppfd (level 3)

Reservoirs have Athena Blended Week ‘Feed’ nutrients at pH5.6, 580ppm

VPD has been stable at 0.6 kPa

Bad Girl #2 is looking better after lowering the light and propping her up with some soil.

The extra seed that I planted 7 days ago sprouted yesterday morning… I named her Bad Girl #3 and moved her to a new home… not sure what to do with her.

The seedlings are getting bigger

PPFD readings were 800+, so I raised the lights a few inches and turned them down to level 2… now they’re reading around 300 PPFD

I didn’t want to throw away the extra seedling, so I found a better home for her in a 2x2x4 tent. Maybe I’ll play around with cloning on Bad Girl #3.

I finally figured out how to create time lapse video with my Wyze V4 camera. Here is the last 10 days.

Still on the Athena ‘Feed’ nutrients… planning to switch to Week 1 Veg in a couple days.
How are they looking?

Today’s photos.
I’m a little concerned with the splotchy green coloration of the leaves. Is this normal?

Planning to top at the 3rd node once node #6 forms.
