Why so many regs?

T

That’s my plan. I can’t think of a better way for someone to grow autos at home. My plan is to pollinate one branch of every mom and keep seeds from the smoke I like. Bagseed! :alien:

Very rarely, I don’t trust the produce it’s sprayed with all kinds of herbicides and pesticides, they don’t taste very good either. Tomatoes from the grocery store are terrible, fresh from the garden they taste great. I do buy the occasional seedless watermelon, but that’s because they don’t sell seeded ones, I never had an issue with watermelon seeds, they became a game as a kid seeing who can spit the seeds the furthest or good old target practice. Lol, then of course telling kids a watermelon is going to grow out of their stomach when they swallow one, but no, they took all the fun away from watermelons!! Lol

Then you end up with problems like the Cavendish banana, soon it’s going to be gone and we can’t chuck pollen on it to try saving the genetics, we have to go back to the inferior bananas and try to breed something equal. Absolutely nothing good has come from seedless anything.

Seeded weed not an issue, clean out as much as possible over a silk screen bang it around a little bit. Gather the dry sieve hash, then make bubble hash with the rest of the material. You can make oil to, but I like hash a hell of a lot better.

Moving right along here :joy::joy::joy:
Someone said it earlier, but mostly weed nerds residing here. This is a special group!!
Most personal growers don’t care about 90% of what we talk about!! Which is why the other point is, outside of this forum it’s mostly fem seeds. Very rarely do you see regular seeds from the larger names that pop up first on google search.

I hate seedless watermelons. Spitting seeds is half the fun and all the protein!

Again, I was talking about feminizing a specific genetic line, not creating a cross. It was my bad that was not being more clear earlier in the thread.

I fem all my mother clones just so I have backup if I ever lose her. I prefer reg seeds so I can recreate the original stock and always be able to make a true f2,f3 and so on that will not be crossed out. That’s why I prefer the regs over fems. But I do have more fems than regs for sure.

Yes, but isn’t that diversity still vast? The way I understand it, inbred depression is fairly difficult to achieve in cannabis. Plus, what we often see as uniformity isn’t actual uniformity. Just because a bunch of plants look alike to us…

I will say, I’ve grown some S1 that are a lot of lookalikes and similar plants mom, and then others that have a wild array, it’s fascinating.

Spanish mail order…

Ha!

I’m not falling for that one.

as someone who’s used both fem and reg seeds for some time i want to put in a couple thoughts. consumers generally drive the market, regardless of the industry. now that legalization is occurring more as time goes on, there’s a big demand for fem seeds because they solve problems new growers might not be prepared to handle. growers typically want to grow their own to save money. ultimately no matter how you skin it, that’s what the objective is.

fem seeds offer a smokable product on every seed. additionally they save you time because most fem seeds are fast flowering and fast maturing. many fems are also full-auto so this allows the average new grower to ‘produce something’ with minimal results. remember, it’s not always about our needs or wants but what the ‘market’ wants as a whole.

reg photo seeds are an incredible time sink. once you’ve identified which sex plants are, there’s cloning, flower responses, and a whole slew of practices one must find proficiency in, in order to ‘produce something’. if you want bud, make sure you have no intersex tendencies and no males letting pollen fly. it’s not so easy for a new grower, who may or may not have any idea what a male looks like, mind you.

ultimately there’s plants for every person it’s just up to us to choose what we like and don’t like. myself, i despise fems because they grow funky for me. they can’t compare at all to the plants borne from male pollen. every feminized plant i’ve grown from every breeder seems to grow funky at first, and generally less vigorous than those with male parents. the real kicker for me is that you can’t let the plants do it naturally. every example of feminization occurs because of manipulation.

My thought (probably up there somewhere) Fem seeds have increased in popularity because of number of plants some states limit homegrowers unless there is a size restriction on what they call a plant vs a seedling, it doesnt make sense to waste time on reg seeds

If youre only allowed 6 plants, may as well be plants you dont have to grow out and kill 2 of because theyre males…

However, ill grow both because i dont really care lol to me im growing weed… and if something i want is only available in reg, then reg it is and vice versa…

Also is this lady done? Im out of bud and shes been in flower for a while Hahahahahah

the “legal plant limit” argument has never made sense to me. i have grown since before it was legalized and no time ever did someone ask if my “plant limit” was “up to code”.

nobody knows you’re growing unless you tell the world. old growers advice " loose lips sink ships "

generally, i would agree that fems are chosen primarily because of ‘legal plant limits’.

what a fine looking stud :smirk: resin on his pods, nice coloration, praying leaves, and good structure.

all i can say is… needs more calmag  or maybe it’s boron hahaha…

thanks for sharing!

Not necessarily nefarious, but I didn’t realize Seeds of Change is owned by Mars, Inc, the “candy people” (multinational corporation who also own companies that make other products).

There are still smaller regional seed makers though, e.g. Johnny’s and High Mowing (Maine and Vermont, respectively). They offer a broad catalog, but admittedly they might still fall under the heirloom category.

I think it’s fair to say a lot of people have hopped into growing since it became legal, both people who didn’t grow at all prior to “legalization” and those who maybe grew a bit when they were young but didn’t want to risk it once they had things like mortgages, kids, and jobs they might jeopardize if they got caught. I suspect many of those people are still a bit liberal on the count front, but nothing crazy, like going over by 2 or so. Under those circumstances I see the appeal of fems.

Personally I think there’s room for fems and regs.

ETA: Had zoomed past a whole mess of posts, now I’m seeing I was repeating what other people already said.

Regarding that last part, it hasn’t been my experience.

For a long time I was popping mostly auto and photo regs. Then I started into more fem autos, and eventually fem photos.

Right now I’m in the midst of a 200 seed hunt that’s mostly auto, but with some well know and oddball photos thrown in the mix. The autos are everything from my own work to fast buds, dark horse, Mephisto and Dutch passion. What I’m seeing solidifies some things for me… and that is, in short, a lot of the old beliefs with fem and auto seeds just don’t hold much weight anymore.

For this hunt, and several hunts in a row, auto and photo fems have been as or more impressive than the regs overall. This coming from someone that breeds regs 90% of the time

We really like Johnny’s.

I think legal cannabis is driving the market for fems a lot more than people realize. When your starting 30k seeds it’s the only logical option
