Windows...*sigh*

Thanks for this offer, Doug. I wouldn’t wanna take it when someone who really needs a laptop might benefit from your generosity. Much appreciated, though.

Besides, I think I should look for something meant for, and capable of being held in one hand. I need something that can be held in one hand, while the other hand has a wand/sensor combo, so I can look at the screen in my hand, often while on a ladder.

I have a macbook pro that I can use right now, as a ‘device’, for this use, but it’s very impractical for how I need to use it. Both my mbp and thinkpad are old, and quite heavy. They’re not easily held with one hand like I need.

Interesting. I don’t know how doable that is, for me.
And how I’d use it. Something to remote view the apogee app from the raspi, on my phone, or something? Or some device/attachment to make a portable screen/raspi Frankenstein? Sounds possibly like more work than is worth it - for my abilities and time right now.

Try a remote app as I suggested. It’ll do exactly what you want from a laptop to your cellphone.

OK, no worries, offer stands if you change your mind. :v:

yeah, i’d go with doug’s laptop and use teamviewer. but you can use teamviewer on the pi of you get windows on it. it runs 4gb of ram so win 7 would be the best bet. i have some keys that are still valid that will never be used if you go that route.

best thing about the pi is running it headless. and you can also hook up things to the rpio output pins to automate things, but that takes a little working.

Looking into this Uvnc a little bit. Some review mentioned that getting into this means that you’ll likely make yourself a target (for “hacking”, etc.). I have an ok understanding about internet, ip addresses, ports, and some associated stuff (I just mean I know about them). But I wouldn’t put myself above making a mistake - usually I spend so much time researching everything until I’m confident I’ll rule out making a costly mistake.

Anyway, I’m gonna briefly check out some others, too.
-RealVNC
-Anydesk
-Impious
-Teamviewer

I think at least three of these might support mobile phones. Will check later on.

Isn’t any remote software increasing this attack surface, regardless of brand?

yeah, that’s the rub. of course any remote software does the same thing. teamviewer is the one i hear referenced all the time with vulnerabilities but i still use it. anydesk requires a license i think. never heard of impious. realvnc is not too bad, i’ve used it before.

Yea, that’s what I meant. Just saying that’s the one I was watching a video for that mentioned that.

I’ve been watching some stuff about “rustdesk”. Sounds good. I watched a few videos about it. First one made it sound good, and fairly easy to use. Second one made it sound pretty technical and a complex - but that might have been mostly because he was setting up his own server or something? I was gardening in the next room so I wasn’t fully paying attention to this one.

Tried rustdesk. Once installed onto mbp, it just wouldn’t open. Couldn’t get it to open/run from applications. Think I’ll give up on this option. Wait till I can buy a small, cheap, used windows tablet. Wish I had something I could trade for one, and someone to trade with - haha.

Thanks everyone.
