707 Seedbank - Hops latent warning

I grew out a bunch of SFV OG x KushCleaner this summer and they turned out great. I’m very happy with my purchase.

Ive ran a buttload of recent 707 seeds, not seen anything that looked like HPLV. Of course getting clones is a different game. But I used to sale shameful amounts of clones, and I swear no matter what, a certain % of folks will screw them up and try to blame the clone seller.

Oregon State University reports transmission to seed, and that symptoms become apparent quicker when grown at high temps, high temps favor reproduction of the viroid. To me, this reads like there is a critical level of the viroid needed in order to cause symptoms. What that level is, no clue. It makes me think, with our current understanding, that detection in seedlings of visual symptoms would be tough. Molecular tests may be able to confirm it, but that tissue harvesting may kill seedlings.

One thought could be, grow seedlings out for a few weeks under high temp and see if you can find duds that way, then send the suspected plants for testing. Would at least give you an idea of how effective that screening method would be. Better to send all plants even, that could help determine a good timeframe for testing infected vs clean plants. Hop viroid is tough though, there are lots of labs working on it right now, but realistically we a year or 2 out from seeing results.

This is where we are going to have to really trust breeders, that their plants are clean. But shit is like covid, plants can carry it with no symptoms and it only takes one dirty cut to spread. My suggestion to breeders would be to ensure both parents are certified clean before making seeds, and then make that certification available to consumers. They estimare that up to 90% of facilities in CA may have some type of infection. Alternatively, from a grower standpoint, getting duds may be easier to swallow if seeds were $1 or less each vs $5-10. That would give you the ability to grow a bunch of seeds, test the plants, and not have to feel bad/take a financial hit if some come back negative. But that is a complicated subject itself. Its also important to point out that I dont think breeders are being malicious about this, but relying only on visual inspection likely wont cut it for the foreseeable future.

I’m hearing reports that deep freezing seeds at least 6 months will help destroy the viroid. The subject needs more research to know for sure how the disease is spread from parent to seed

I haven’t seen this before interesting. No rhyme or reason just doing my thing making seeds but still interesting. I imagine this is a good example of transposable elements maybe?

Too much potassium silicate they are working through, 100% coco so I add some silica to help the stems and such.

Not sure on the exact qualification but variegations are directly linked with sectorized ALA disorders. Enzymatic for sure but to confirm it’s fully transposable … it’s asking me a bunch ^^

I dont want to hi jack your thread but how did you know it was hlvd? Testing kit? Experience? I am asking cause i have plants in question and took in clones locally, i have reused containers, Ive used the same scissors on multiple plants, during trimming sessions. Never knew it could pass from seeds.
