Ammonia smell = root rot?

Morning everyone!! Entered the flower room today and an intense smell of ammonia was present. Last week I put a bit of EWC on top of pots, mixed with soil and watered. Would that be root rotting? Or EWC farts? :hugs: :joy: :flushed:    :disappointed_relieved:
Already killed plants due to overwatering!! Gulity of newbieness! :sunglasses: :sob:
Thanks!!!

Ah, anytime I had anything remotely like that…there was a cat involved :joy:
I always have old roots rotting and never have a smell from them.

Could very well be, are your plants sitting in standing water? Do your pots have good drainage?

It means you’ve smothered the ground and its become anaerobic, hence the ammonia smell. The combination of ewc and over watering will make a mess. Similar to compost that gets funky when its too wet / moist with mostly green plant material.

Not sure how to remedy it beside either removing the ground you put down or holding up on watering until the smell goes away. Maybe even both

Thanks everyone!! I’d say yes, each pot has hydroton (expanded clay pebbles), and since I already killed a plant with too much water, it made me wonder. From the 5 only one is looking a bit sad, the others are kicking!!

Thanks, since I put only a handful in each pot, I’ll go for the second option!! Thanks!
