Just had issues loading a page and got a ‘429 error’ when I tried to give a like, not sure if connected but thought I would report issues connecting from the UK.

OK getting “Sorry, we couldn’t load that topic, possibly due to a connection problem. Please try again. If the problem persists, let us know.” a LOT just now on the main page, this topic took about 10 refreshes to show…
yes site is behaving very badly

Troubles as well on mobile when trying to like a post or reply to a topic, or even just trying to load a topic.

This is server side issue… there is nothing you can do on your side.
There are commercial solutions that are much more effective against DDOS attacks. For example Cloudflare.
I hope that it is only isolated issue today, but if there will be more of them, we should buy cloudflare proxy.

Nope, this will be a true old school, one british bloke in the shed, hand made product.
In the traditional style of some legendary british cars, music, and hi-fi equipment.
I have been making ground on reliability lately, a year ago it would crash every few days, now it has been running nearly two months with no hiccups of any sort hardware wise. I have also been making changes to the overall design to make it more modular. It should be able to control up to 8 rooms, each with 7 pumps, full range of sensors, and optionally 8 relays per room for ‘other things’.
Back on topic, have not noticed any issues today.
