What soil was it?

If it’s peat-based if they dry out rehydrating it can be frustrating. There’s several things that can help that along if you want to try. Saponin has been quite a friend in my garden helping soil wetting.

I use quillaja but aloe and yucca are used for similar reasons. Aloe has lots of benefits.

Typically, rain forests do not have good soil. I’m sure the amazon is similar. There’s so much life in the forest that any bit of nutrients get used up before they can be deposited.

Stick it in a bucket of water for awhile. Seriously.

Walmart is putting clearance prices on most of the soil they carry. I’ve heard rumors of their versions of Pro-Mix (contain 2 cubic feet) going down to $2.75 a bag at various locations. Currently $4 and $5 at my local wally world for the yellow and pink bag, respectively. They’re both primarily peat, I think the pink bag contains more coco and a wetting agent. Both claim to contain mycos.

From now til next spring they’ll be trying to make room for seasonal stuff in the garden area, eg. halloween and xmas decorations. I scored a 15" wood fired pizza grill for $65.

This. I’d bet good money that the soil just got dehydrated. Peat is hydrophobic once dry, so you have to rehydrate it gradually, most often with a saponin, as mentioned above.
Barring that, you have to put it in a container that’s got a lot of room, add water, mix it all around until three water is absorbed, add more water, mix, etc etc.
