I remember seeing this years ago, glad its here for me to reference! Thanks for posting this back on OG
I was wondering myself about using fabric pots for root pruning, I even started a thread asking about it, but it didn’t get any traction. Are those 1 gal pots? How are they working out for you?
One gallon? No sir, they are custom made and are about the same size as a solo cup. Bonsai!
I just had the COOLEST experience. I’m a bit of a pack-rat when it comes to information and back before (2012 I think) the original OG shutdown I pulled a ton of stuff off the site. I was just doing a little housecleaning (freeing up disk space on a file server) and I stumbled onto a directory called grow. Lo and behold, I have a ton of the old OG stuff squirreled away.
I just finished re-reading Oldtimer1’s great BonzaiMums article in which he wrote - “This bonsai mother, if well fed, produce 10 to 30 good cuttings every 14 days under an HID or every 20 days under fluorescent shop light. This means a 4 ft x 2 ft shoplight with 18 mums, could produce an output of over 9500 cuttings a year.”
This is absolute bliss. If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to work with whoever to see what we can do about reviving some of this literary gold.
I’d love to see OG find a way to get that old info back in a thread. I missed the first round, but I’m not sure how.
peace
That’s really cool, I totally remember that thread and doing some bonsai moms based on it.
What format is the stuff in? It might be easiest to just put it all in a zip file on a file sharing site if there’s alot in there…
Most of the stuff I grabbed was for my own use and interest. I ripped the entire page article complete with css and images. Just a matter of finding someone who wants to give it a good home.
I have several articles written by Oldtimer1, 10k, train1, ~s. I can zip up any of it and make it available one way or another.
Nice find, that bonsai mother tutorial is archived here.
I have used these methods and Drbudgreengenes’ methods for years now.
Going to have to find some time to dig around here. Granted, I’ll never have as much time invested here in educating myself as I did the old OG. Must admit, this site tends to be a bit obscure. But then maybe it’s the effect of the last 10 years on me, and not the site itself that obscures the otherwise obvious.
I still have and use my OG aero-cloner. Great stuff.
Thank you Reiko! Just what I need.
I want to start practicing so I’ll be able to begin keeping a few select moms. I’ve got another grow space I’m working on and keeping moms will be a part of it. I’m hoping to get some indoor produce growing and try some vertical gardening. And, of course all of that will be next to my cannabis work! Still dreaming, after all of these years.
peace
That OT1 bonsai article is legendary. I remember reading that for the first time, eyes growing wider and wider.
To me, that was the old OG…
Cheers.
Here are nine bonsai mothers in a 24"x24"x18" area. The ones in the front were just recently replaced with fresh clones. Ones in the back are about 9-12 months old.
Apollo11 from yesteryear.
You’re using bags of some sort @ReikoX ? How do you handle re-potting/soil rejuvination, or do you?
Yes they are about 16 oz. fabric pots. I sewed them myself. I keep them for around 9 months or so, then replace them with a fresh clone.
Why do you replace the plants rather than shaving and rejuvinating the growing medium? Or is that something not possible with bags?
I remember reading this on the OG OG and it was an eye opener. Still is, I use this root pruning method to keep moms sadly I lost my frost boss mom a while back and I winder if it was because I didn’t pack the soil in around it well enough. Thanks for saving this gem.
I’m moving back indoors again @riahgorl_1. I’ve got a lot of re-educating to do.
Sorry to hear of your loss. We’re you using a solid pot or bag of some sort?
It was in a 1 gallon felt bag. Symptoms were root related I’m sure, I may have trimmed too much. Seemed fine for a while after the root trimming and then went down hill fast. Was a bummer but I’m on to bigger and better things at this point.
I’m trying outdoor for the first time this year and so far I’m not loving it. IDK I just prefer the control i get indoors and I can’t get excited about something that may get taken out by a little dose of hail, Oklahoma get lots of hail, and then early freezes at the end of the cycle are going to be a real issue as well, not to mention the 120f temps and very high humidity. However, with all of that said summer solstice is right around the corner so my tune may change with flowering kicking off soon.
