Same. Been sitting here in my grilling apron for days now waiting to call dibs.
Don’t misunderstand. I feel a partnership with my horses. You can’t spend as much time with them as I have without creating a bond, at least I can’t.
What I mean is the mentality of a horse DEMANDS that there is a clear leader. If not, many times you’re getting into a situation where the horse says to itself “there has to be a herd leader and if this person won’t take the job, I will”.
It’s just herd mentality. They can become pushy to a point of danger sometimes if there isn’t a clear and defined leader, and your it.
A mule, is more of an independent thinker.
True words tripper.
Tough as nails, or dead. That weeds out the weak fast.
The main difference I see between farms and ranches is when I think of a ranch, I think of a large(ish) operation operation the produces solely (or mainly) livestock for use as meat.
When I think of a farm, they may have livestock, but are likely producing other edible plants/items but may have live stock as well.
Nothing official, those I just the connotations I get with each of those words.
I think most people(especially those outside the US) would consider Texas part of the Western US. Pretty much everything West of the Mississippi. Which, come to think of it, I don’t think you see many referred to as ranches East of the Mississippi.
What about horse ranches?even on the east coast, they call em horse ranches
You sure have a strong need to prove an inaccurate point about ranches not being a farm. I’m from Canada. I understand ranches are farms, lol. Even if people in Texas wants to believe it’s that way. It’s just not defined that way. I’m sorry for this great injustice to the people of Texas.
They can be called ranches. But their still farmers.
Edit im also just arguing because you were rude to me and called my pure bred scottish highlanders not real cattle trying to show that red brahma are better then tried to put your self on a other level because you were a rancher so I wouldnt know because I’m a farmer. Theirs a word for people like that.
I dunno, I don’t have much interaction with those. Most of the places with horses around me aren’t too large, and the ones I see most commonly all refer to themselves as farms(which more than once has had me reach out, only to not find what I was looking for)
Just ruminating on the difference between the two
Lol. And all of this because I said I havnt seen cattle run from flies.
Egotistical! That just a texan for Ya, or someone from Oklahoma. Dang, that’s me too!
@Bullskinner They still do that in Eminence today. Know friends that take their horses down for a week at a time.
I think I’m just a stoner with livestock but I have a garden we just call it home . Dexter cattle / Goats and sheep for fire clearance . I’m too old for horses but did ride endurance with an Appy mostly 50 milers .
we have ranches here, i dont live on one, theres one guy here with a farm that owns , last i heard more then a county. A lot of 4 section farms and ranches here, never saw them run, most i ever saw was the cattle(not bulls) all gather into a tight little bunch
Yeah those big farms rarely have bulls. Just steer and cows and calf. Typically they breed with artificial insemination, reduces the need of having a bull. And of the heard the bull causes most the problems.
Interesting fact With the cows they develop a heiarchy of a queen cow, her calf even reign Supreme over the other calfs of the same age group.
Sounds heaven. How do you like your Dexter’s? Do they need much winter protection? How are they for calving?
Have not got to experimented enough yet. This is still a very young farm in terms of beef processing.
Only ranch I have is the condiment…to go with the free steaks and chops! I’m beginning to lose hope here…
Just kidding guys. I wouldn’t put ranch anywhere near a steak.
@Slick1 had me scared you were gonna ruin some great steak there!
