makes sense. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled to see what you do. You may need a return pump for the second tent. Could probably pick one up for about $10 that would do it.
We both smoke a fair bit but want to switch to vapes. Carts not herb but filling our own. Our consumption is around an Oz a week. The sooner the better we crop though as we are upstairs in an apartment and don’t want to smoke with a baby around.
Fully understand about the broke. I’ve just asked a friend for a borrow until the 15th when the next invoice clears there’s another one due on the 18th so I should have a bit of spare cash to get this cabinet together.
Need to have a look for some 120mm pc fans cheap. And there’s an aquatics shop nearby for activated carbon to make a filter. Along with an old pair of the Mrs tights
Gonna use this miniature vacuum filter to make it. An off the shelf filter would take up the cabinet. So needed something to scale and the only way for that usually is DIY. Much like yourself my space will be very individual lol
The pump I’m currently using under the bus tubs has a sensor that trips automatically, and senses at like 4mm and pumps down to 2mm, so it’s a really specific one. Maybe I could rig similar, but I’ve been trying to balance time vs money vs projects that delay other projects. If I try to make them work off a central sump, I would probably try to rig a PVC pipe at an angle down to a garden hose fitting, which would then run to a sump. Been pondering that one. More effort, lower cost. 3d printer would let me make fittings for it pretty easily, but then I would have to rig up a whole leakproof sump that was low enough to drain into, and various other considerations.
I suppose when we rework part of the basement and had planned to take out the raised floor, I could leave the raised floor in some areas and make an actual sump pit. I’m going to need to contemplate this option more.
For your carbon filters, you might take a look at some of the ones that people make for 3d printers. Some are pretty high powered because of ABS fumes and such. They might be for smaller volume than you need, but might have some ideas.
Some updates! I just spent a while in the grow room, shuffling things around. Still in shambles a bit, so no overall photos yet, but here we go.
After taping some plastic over the window and in anticipation of using it for drying, I got the other tent set up! I am using it currently to store the rest of the components of the kit, so I put the other shelf in there so you can see what is under the plastic and bus tubs in the main tent. It’s a 12"x42"x14" coated shelf.
And here are some developing bud shots, they’re all weirdly/intensely green for some reason, moreso than the plant appears to the eye. Not sure why the phone camera was processing the image that way, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ All of the following are from Plant 2.
Yeah, the idea of a coated shelf appealed to me, considering the humid environment. I have other similar non-coated shelving, and some of it has gotten rusty in places, so I figured if it can survive a restaurant walk-in fridge, it could survive a hydro tent.
Mine tend to photograph more yellow than they are as well, when I photo under the LED with red. But I also tend to wait to add cal-nit until they look yellow.
I am also jealous of your restaurant supply hookup, I would go nuts in there.
Interesting about the colors! I might try turning on more/different lights to try it.
Random people can order from Webstaurant, you don’t have to be a professional chef or anything. The other place I go is here in CT and open to the public. it’s worth a browse for ideas!
I figured it was wholesale, so you needed a tax # and all. It is also quite dangerous for me as I love kitchen stuff so very much. Thanks for the link!
So technically it’s day 19 since 12/12, and I see places say defoliate on day 21, but I was stressing about the humidity in the tent so I decided to go for it.
Before photo, featuring the puppy boy and my weirdly comfortable vintage chair that I refer to as an interrogation chair.
I raised my light by putting a bar between the existing bars it was hanging from, and just put the wire hangers over it. Due to the ducting behind it, it wanted to hang at an angle. So I put some containers of hydroton on it to weigh it down.
Humidity is already looking better. I picked up a pack of cheap bluetooth hygrometers a bit ago and realized I could put some down in the middle of the plants to track it from there, so I’m keeping track of that in addition to the main tent sensor.
I got these: Xiaomi Mijia Bluetooth Thermometer 2 Wireless Smart Electric Digital Hygrometer Thermometer, in hopes of eventually connecting them to a home automation setup. If anyone else does, a. you may need an old version of the app, b. don’t update the firmware on the thermometers!! As of when I got them and reflexively updated the firmware, that made them unable to connect to HA, but maybe they’ve fixed it since then. Anyway, they’re still useful as-is, and they are pretty close to one another in readings. Made sure to put ones that read the same in the tent, to avoid issues with discrepancies.
I know that I flipped to 12/12 on the 20th because I distinctly recall debating with myself if it was worth waiting an extra day just to be able to “remember the twenty-first night of September” and ultimately decided it was not. Which amusingly* means I remember the twentieth night of September.
Good call using the restaurant supplies for shelving. And your sump makes a lot more sense now you’ve explained it without pots on the shelf. Pretty much foolproof setup
I’m impressed…I did say elsewhere I was considering Coco for this run as stuff is taking long to arrive. And will give me more time to source “low profile” components as height is my biggest limitation by far
My schedule is hectic at the moment so expect sporadic interactions but I will be following along.
Your ladies look like they’re starting to stack now but I have differing opinions on defoliation. I’ve done a couple side by sides with defol and not. And the not had always produced better. (By not I mean still taking any huge fans that are blocking major light and more importantly airflow)
My big reason for doing the sump (vs a standard “res under flood tray” setup) was to have the reservoir outside the tent. Reasons included: water temps, vertical space, hassle getting on the ground to deal with anything.
If you’re similarly inclined but were willing to leave more water in the bottom of your enclosure, you could probably rig up something that operated similarly to my sump pump. It has a sensor that triggers and then it runs for 15 seconds after it no longer senses water.
I spent a TON of time reading specs on pumps to find one that’d pump as much water out as possible, and had a fairly low sensing height because I didn’t want stagnant water sitting and getting hot. SO much thought has gone into all of this I’m still learning though, and still finding things I want to tweak for next time. All of it was theoretical until now. Sometimes I spend a ton of time thinking about a project and like 2 steps in I throw it all out and start over. Luckily this has not been that sort of project.
Today I busted out my fairly old DSLR camera, and my hefty lens and an extra zoom adapter thing.
Thoughts on which of these (if any) y’all prefer over the phone camera pictures I’ve been taking so far?
All 3 of these are the same bud. First is the auto-focus lens that came with the camera, then my big zoom lens, then the big zoom + 2x zoom thing. Ignore exposures/light level for now, still playing with that. Some of the slightly darker images showed the trichomes forming better.
I also need a new glasses thing for the viewfinder, so the focus isn’t quite perfect. Also the depth of field gets REALLY short with the extra zoom, so it’s a small target to hit
Anyway, probably won’t bust that out all the time, but when it’s time for Bud Shots, I’ll definitely do that.
It’s a Pentax k20 (I think that’s the model), I got it because it was compatible with lenses I already had from my 35mm SLR, and I knew I didn’t want to invest a ton in the project, so found a used camera body on ebay that would work. I don’t get the newfangled autofocus other than on the lens it came with, which was the first pic.
I think could get the last one more sharp with some effort and refamiliarizing myself with it all. I took the latter 2 on a tripod, but the floor in the room is kinda bouncy, so I might rig up additional support to keep it nice and stable. Once I get the thing that’ll let me put my glasses up to the viewfinder easier I’ll be able to get a better view for focusing.
And no, I’m so impatient. I’m definitely going to be trying it as early as I can in the process, and then checking it as it goes. At least partially because I have no idea what cure level I will like.
