CrunchBerries’Probiotic SIP Thread

Thank you sir!

New bag of Buildasoil 3.0 is the soil mix. So far, I’ve only top dressed when she got transplanted: BAS Craft Blend, Dr. Earth 4-6-3, Bu’s compost, and bokashi.

Ahh, that explains it. I’ve been seeing positive results from BAS. I watch a few videos he put up on YouTube using earth box’s. Needless to say, dude knows his shit. It’s refreshing to see a humble, honest company in this industry.

Ima huge fan of bokashi! I use it religiously in my worm bins and turn barrel composters. Even outdoor in my raised beds I’ll take handfuls and bury it randomly. Once the beds get going, I don’t need to fertilize at all.

Hell yea! I’ve been using Dr. Earth dry amendments myself and having good success, love that it’s cheap and available at the hardware store too! Plant looks beautiful

What’s good my fellow OG’ ers. I mixed up the SIP substrate 4 days ago. I went ahead and added 1 cup of kelp meal 1-0-2 to the mix of ammendments along with 3 tablespoons of Epsom and left out the sulfur I had planned to add. It had alot of calcium in it and with the calcium in the tomato tone and in my compost already, I certainly would have had to much.

Hydrated the substrate with fermented aloe extract, humic acid, LAB and BTi. I used my blumat digital tensiometer to dial in the blumat. Cannabis has a preferred M-Bar of 100, and since I am trying to simulate a sub- irrigation where the lowest part of the planter is naturally wetter, I went with 80 M-Bar. Dialed the blumat in at 80 and went 2 notches tighter.

I had plans on adding aeration in the bottom resivore but I’m not sure it would have even made a difference since I’m not going have the typical amount of standing water like a common SIP would. It’s my belief that the burlap I used to cover the plastic false bottom, since I dropped it down into the bottom resivore will act as a “wick” and have a similar function to that of a capillary mat. I do have a hole for an airline and may inject O2 at some point, it wouldn’t hurt but I’m not convinced yet that it will have a major influence. Please keep in mind that this design is a prototype and I have never done SIP’s this way.
The traditional design I have incorporated a soaker hose and used that to aerate the water, basically brewing an AACT 24/7, and I’ve have fantastic results. But either way it goes, added O2 at the root zone is always appreciated by the plant and microbials.

So now we wait obviously for the soil to “cook”. I stuck the SIP into my 4x8 tent with a digital heater that has thermostat controls. It’s set to maintain 80F, that should speed things up a bit and I should be good to go for transplanting the seedling in a few weeks. I dusted the substrate surface with food grade diamatious earth in the event fungus gnats attempt to infiltrate.

Seedling is Choco Lato (chocolope x gelato 41)
Germinated using paper towel and sowed into a rapid rooter plug. The substrate used is my Base coco mix with added EWC. I topped off the substrate with silica quartz grit to stop gnats from getting in. Seedling is 4 days old since breaking ground.

Here’s a few shots of my first SIP experience.

Fem Frankenstein

Atonic. I can’t seem to get her to green up. I’m bumping the Nitrogen a little more (again).

London Pound Cake crosses.

I’d say it’s safe to say that I am a fan so far. The Atonic and the Fem Frankenstein were flipped seven days ago. We’ll see how they do during flower for me.

Looking real good my guy! Have you tried to foliar with a little Epsom? That may help to bring back some darker green color. If you are going to up the Nitrogen and you get some clawing from it, just hit her with a healthly drench of pure water, since nitrogen is easily leached, it’s a very easy one to correct if overdone or unnecessary.
Chances are you won’t have to make any corrections that require leaching, and if your going to be flipping them to flower they’ll need that extra Nitrogen for the first few weeks.

They are on day seven of flip.

My bad, don’t know how I didn’t see that.

@McShnutz ,
I am the last person to throw stones at someone who misses a word or three on post! LOL
I’m guilty of that more often than most.

I was debating on starting a new thread but I just don’t have it in me yet. Was doing some research on ferments and I stumbled upon this gem. Interesting read on the topic of biochar and using wood vinegar, a byproduct produced from making biochar. In my mind, this wood vinegar could easily be replaced by KNF ferments. Also alternatively the various biochars produced could be substituted with the standard wood based biochar and fortified with fermented chicken manure. Very similar to using any parent material deemed worthy of making a ferment extract, then used to soak the biochar. Check it out…

looks brilliant. Unfortunately burlaps disintgrates 90% by week 8 in the bottom of a SIP. I could not find any natural fabric, thick, thin, loose, tighht, that stayed whole past 6 weeks. Yeah, I tested in SIPs w/o plantys and dug up every week, after I discovered the issue. I have to use weed fabric, 2-year kind suites, or any synthetic, or it wont last the grow and I need it to keep soil grains out of reservoir if possible. Felt lasted longest, but only a few weeks longer. I jusst did away with a cloth, made sure my holes were 7/32 or smaller so no dirt/peat falls through if moist.

I found a cool way to oxygenate rez that isn’t an airstone (which also I regularly run on a burst mode, 30 sec, every 5-10 min). Instead use a cheap aquarium water pump. You can get a fitting for the exit part, many pumps come with this feature (pics below) as a screw-in adaptor to exit jet… anyway, it’s got a small air-tube fitting on it 90 degrees and you run air line up through your soil matrix or up the feed pipe. Attach a larger tube, 2 ft long, to the normal outlet and place around bottom of reservoir. Put on a burs ttimer, 30 seconds every 5 monites. When it goes on the pump sucks in rez water and spits it out the pipe, keeping organic sediment from collecting, becoming anaerobic and/or changing pH… However that air tube attachment… aargh I can’t remember the name, it’s named after a famous engineer, starts with letter V, it automatically sucks air down and into the outlet flow of water, constantly adding more dissolved oxygen, which is the name of the game for SIPs. You can really bump up performance with this adaptation, and, prevent accumulation bio-solids from ruining you day, plus allows them to get broken down by microbes and fed back to plants

.

I run cooked soil and Promix (seperately) Same situ in both. I run GL SweetCandy, 5:2 Humic: Kelp, Liquidirt, and NPK RAW Veg/flower bennies (I culture seperately so I dont have to keep buying), plus mycos (also cultured) In my reservoirs, whether Homecooked LOS or ProMix peat/perlite

Venturi valve is the coined name for the fitting. They only work properly if there isn’t a back pressure. Very clever use of one tho!!

oh thank you thank you. I spent 30 mins with google, no avail. Recently I left a 30w industrial pump with 2, 5 inch circular airstones on 24/7 in a SIP that was 10gallon rez (Rubbermaid low profile tote) with 7 gal planter on top, connected by 4inch dia. perf poop-pipe, ended up with ten gal hydro roots. SIP above, DWC below. oooph! Worked fine, not a recommendation however. water pump with venturi my fave to date.

Before this run is done I’ll snap some better photos.

In other news, we have at least one confirmed female of Lemon Wookie v2, Sour Diesel, SoulMate, and as of last night a Dream Beaver :beaver:. Pretty sure one of the two LemonThai x Appy is a male, while the other is unconfirmed.

Be good family~ Crunchy

Space cowboy and Blk Razz look phenomenal!!! Makes my damn mouth water just looking at em.

Yeah I grabbed a 17lb bag of lump charcoal this morning, I want to play around and see if I can fortify it with a manure based ferment. Either as a stand-alone ammendment or a complimentary, but watering with vinegar @ 1:200 RoDi.

Thought I’d try my hand at a homemade version of kashi

@CrunchBerries and @BeagleZ have been doing work with those Black Raspberries, all of those BR’s seem to be show-ers and growers. And Crunch, are those Lemon Thai x Appy F1’s or did you pick up some F2’s? Anyway, looking good as always and I always appreciate your humor.
