Anyone here Malt their own grains before? I have a bunch of red and white wheat seed that I use to grow wheatgrass and cold-press juice it, and thought I’d malt some for some of my outdoor SIPs.

I don’t know much. I dunno at what stage of sprouting I should stop the process at by putting in oven on cookie trays, or at what heat, methods, yaddah, yaddah. So, if there are any malters out there… wheat or otherwise, I sure could use a couple pointers. I promise it’s all going into soil! (buuurp!) 'scuse me.

Edit: McShnutz and Crunch, you two slay me. lol.

Malting Process & Technology - Stone Path Malt.

It’s been on my list since I do brew beer. Never got around to materializing anything tho since Northern Brewer is about 1/2 mile from my house. I’m afraid I’d screw up the malting process. But for use in a garden any outcome that’s successfully malted I’d think would work great.
Lol, yeah the name is an actual nickname my father gave me as a kid. Lol, good ol pops.

Thanks mate. I’m gonna jump in. Hope things get good’n’zymatic, then I’ll lightly toast 'em and put up a photo of the finished product before I dump into my soil. Don’t need the work, but has been one of those, ''I wonder if I could do that?" questions nagging at me for 18mos… No longer. Today we find out.

Did I mention CityPickers are on sale a CanadianTire? 29$ from 50$ Castors, cover. Shallow rez needs daily filling during flower, but still. You could always attach large rez with control bucket and lay 6 of them out! I stick with my DIY, but this work real well. Edit: To measure these SIPs, look in bottom photo, those floor tiles are 12 inches square

Those are really slick! Can’t beat that price and the volume is definitely sufficient to grow bushes!!

I made a few modifications to the authentic BAS kashi blend.
I have a grain mill I use for home brewing but a food processor could easily be a suitable substituted. The recipe is very simple…

3 lb malted barley
1 lb red wheat
1 lb steel cut oat
1 lb organic coconut sugar
.5 lb rolled rye berry
.5 lb hemp hearts
.5 lb micronized rock dust
.25 lb kelp meal
** Dry mix all grain inputs and spread out thin**

  • Using a flour sift, add rock powder, then sugar, then kelp, applied individually*

120ML fermented aloe extract
60ML fermented corn SST
1.50 Cup Lactobacillus serum
30ML Vitamin B (superthrive)
Combine liquid ingredients and apply with a pump sprayer or spray bottle. Use the entire amount of liquid inoculate

Allow this to naturally air dry but do not encourage a fast dry like using a fan or something.

Add more diversity of your grains if you like, flax, quinoa, chia are all suitable. I went with hemp hearts over flax but both have omega fatty acids and mycos go bonkers for it.

I’d you don’t have fermented aloe or seed sprout extract, no big deal. Same thing with B Vitamins, you don’t need them but add em if you got em!! The main liquid that absolutely required is LAB.

I’ll let this mix dry out some, and then hand blend everything together and again spread everything out thin and evenly and reapply another round of LAB. After a final dry, bag it up.

Finally, it’s worth noting that all the dry goods will absorb the liquid. Even tho it may seem “dry to the touch” there’s still an internal moisture to everything. Bag it up, allow this mix to sit for a week or so to “ferment”. The sweet/sour aroma will increase but it also smells yeasty and there’s a very distinctive malted aroma as well.

Hey bud those are Copa’s tester F1s. I got a 5 pack a while back. Had some germ issues with 2 and lost one to incompetence. I’ve got high hopes for these last two.

I’m debating on running one outside this year @McShnutz , I better make up my mind quick though. Nothing beside that currently for me.

I’ll definitely keep a cut in the garden for a while, as is suites my life/temperament perfectly. I would like to do a seed increase/preservation in the very near future. I think either Sunshine4 or Space Monkey would be in line first.

I was thinking about running it outside too along with those 2 Copa testers I got from @BeagleZ

I think I have a pack of that BadDawg sunshine x sunshine if you needed more beans for a seed increase. I’ll happily donate whatever to a seed increase. Y’all are welcome to my bean catalog anytime.

Thanks for that man! Let me see where we stand once I get serious about that type of project.

Welp! I guess it’s about time for a brief day 59f update and photo dump.

Sunshine4
Both phenos are floppy, medium-low yield, have a loud lemon cleaner smell and are beginning to finish up before the rest of the tent. Slight purpling as we round third.

Black Raspberry-Razz
Minimal support, medium-heavy yield, and has a loud berry-Wookie smell. Getting some purple as senescence sets in.

Space Cowboy
Minimal support, medium-heavy yield, and lemon-citrus smells.

SunRa
Minimal support, medium-heavy yield, and cedar-citrus smells.

That’s all for now folks!

Oooh, I like the way that Sunshine 4 looks, though, nice and chunky. Those others do look like they have another two weeks, at least, to go. Interesting.
