Do it yourself MicroOctopot Auto Fill System

Here’s my current dilemma: got a plastic 1 gallon paint bucket to act as the level control reservoir.

Today I was looking at it and realized the bulkheads I’ll be using are made for flat sides and the paint bucket is a cylinder.

so, either caulk the ever-living bejeesus out of it and hope for the best or change container.

Worth buying one of those cheap plastic ammo cans maybe?

Ya know, your best bet might be to just go to WallyMart and buy a shoebox-sized opaque storage box to use. Don’t buy one with that rigid plastic that can crack when you drill a hole in it. Look for the softer, thicker plastic. and it doesn’t need to be that big to do the job. Shoebox-ish.

You can make a good seal on a round surface, but it is messy and puts stress on the plastic that can cause problems.

I hope that helps.

I used rubber hose washer with mine. I was thinking it might make a seal on one of those paint buckets. Did you try with washers?

no haven’t tried it yet. I don’t have much confidence in my hydrolic skills, I’m more comfortable with electricity. I’ll find an opaque flat walled container or take a heatgun to the plastic paint can.

Friend who has cats? Grab a square kitty litter bucket that kitty litter comes in…

Keep in mind, some plastics drill easily, SOME DONT. Sterilite tubs I avoid like the plague because more times than I can count they would crack as I drilled them. Rubbermaid tubs never did. Totally different plastics / fragility level. Kitty litter buckets are closer to rubbermaid tubs than the sterilite garbage

Dear Lady,
I hesitate to even ask, but do you have an electric drill and any kind of drill bit to use with it?

Cause if you don’t all of us chivalrous dudes are going to deluge you with advice on that basic capability in hand. You need to make a whole bunch of 5/8" holes in plastic so, yeah.

Sorry, my HandyDude Basics synapses are kickin in… we all want you to succeed here, advice aplenty on tap, we’ll get ya there.

And, ALWAYS use a backing block when drilling plastics!

Yea, I have the tools and means, just little experience.

Got this.

Between this, the paint can and the heat gun, I’m fairly certain I’ll have something working.

The spade you are using is 5/8?

Nice box! You could go to war with that box😉

Yep, you should check but I think 5/8 inch is Standard. Measure the OD of your bulkhead.

What kind of 5/8 drill bit do you have Layin around?

Baby steps but the part I was dreading is done. Looks like my next run is gonna start when the spirit moves me. Time for the caulk to cure then… :joy:
