F1, F2, ... what does it mean?

Hello everybody ! it’s been 3 years I I grow and I’m so beginner ^^ I often see seeds F1, F2, … but what does it mean? thank you :v:

F stands for filial (think family).

An F1 is a cross of two distinct varieties (P1 x P2).
An F2 is a cross of the F1 generation (ie brothers and sisters)
An F3 is a cross of the F2s and so on…

Actually, it has a similar but less dramatic effect in plants. Often line breeding like this will lead to loss of vigor. Some breeders will actually create different lines from the same F2 generation selecting a different trait in each line. Only at the end will they cross those two lines, often restoring hybrid vigor.

Yes but we all want multiple limbs and heads on our plants but not on our kids :laughing:
